There's tons of kids books on Obama that go into his family history. I saw some at Target.
I would check Ebay. I've ordered my long lost favorites like Tiki Tiki Tembo and some kids books from the Philippines. |
My kids recently enjoyed "The Hello, Goodbye Window" by Norton Juster. It's a picture book about a biracial child visiting her grandparents, an African-American grandmother and a white grandfather. Race isn't addressed in the story--it's just refreshing to see a biracial family. It's available used on Amazon for $4 (1 cent plus $3.99 shipping). |

If he's 3 and under, you might want to look at Babybug magazine (www.cricketmag.com) which sometimes pictures multiracial families. (They're usually available at the library, too, so you could flip through to check.)
If 3 or older, "Children Just Like Me" by Barnabas and Anabel Kindersley shows all kinds of families from around the world. My kids go back to it over and over. |
Ezra Jack Keats wrote a bunch of classic children's books with children of color (The Snowy Day, Peter's Chair Whistle for Willie, etc.). I loved them when I was a kid, so you should be able to find them online pretty cheap (try alibris.com)

P.S. if you want a book that explicitly discusses all the different beautiful skin colors one little girl encounters in her neighborhood, you could look for "the colors of us". |
My son LOVES babybug. He is 3, so I'm suprised he is still into it. And you are correct, most of the characters are bi-racial. We are a white family, but we too are interested in biracial books because I have a friend who had a black man over to the house for dinner and the 3yr old declared that a gorilla was in the house. The parents were horrified. I want to avoid any such outburst. |
Corduroy! My all time favorite. |
I mean ones with regular stories just with some black characters in the stories |
I always find some at the library. Not sure of your location, we go to the fabulously newly remodeled Takoma/DC branch, and there's always a great selection books w/ characters of every color. |
"Corduroy" and "The Snowy Day." |
"Princess Grace"-can't think of the author right now. |
"Princess Grace" is by Mary Hoffman-just found it on Brown Baby Books-check out the site! |
