Transition from Private to Public in 1st Grade?

Anonymous
We're considering public for our daughter next year. We love her current private, but don't know that we can swing the cost for the next decade. Our school would be Rock Creek Forest, which seems nice, but we don't know anyone with kids there. We're wishing we'd just done it this year so she could start with all of the other new kids in K. So, I have a few questions and would love to hear about experiences:

-Did you transition your kid to public in 1st grade? Was it tough? Do you wish you'd done so in K?
-Did you transition your kid to Rock Creek Forest from private school? How did it compare? Any regrets?

Thanks!

We will be moving our DC from private to public at RCF in first grade. Not next year but the year after. We have several neighbors who are pleased with RCF. I like that the classes are small in early years. I think that will help with the transition.

We moved last year and decided to put our daughter in a charter school that we loved which meant repeating a grade because of their age cut-off. She was previously in a public school. After the first semester, although we loved the school, we decided that it would be better to move her to the public school my son was at, otherwise, he would have to repeat kindergarten, and long story short, it would've been quite a stressor on the family dynamics. We made a decision that was best for the family and everyone adjusted. She is thriving this year in her 3rd grade class at a public school and was placed in a class with a neighbor she knew, and we are great friends with his family. So it was confirmation to us that we made the right decision. Also, we are a military family so don't have the blessing to keep our kids at one school for their entire schooling. We have proof that kids are so resilient. She will do great!

We are moving our K student from private to public in a few weeks. We actually wanted to have him start at the public school at the beginning of the year, but hadn't confirmed our move to the new school district yet. We thought about letting him finish out the year at his private school, but my aunt who is a K teacher strongly recommended switching him right away, so he could start getting to know the neighborhood kids better.

We switched from Catholic to public at the start of 1st. It was totally smooth.
