are there decent public schools on CH, or is the option for many parents private school?

There are several good public elementary school options, but I think middle school and high school probably still require private for most families who can remotely afford it. We have a child who isn't school-age yet, but we plan on doing elementary school on the Hill and, unless the schools get a lot better in the next ten years, either moving or sending DC to private after that.

there are a few good public schools on the Hill, but as we found out in the recent lottery, unless you're in boundary, it doesn't look good. Very few spots open. My personal opinion, if you're moving to the Hill & want to do public, move in boundary for Brent Elementary.

6:08 -- that is really good to hear, as we are in boundary for Brent! What makes it better than, say, Watkins or Peabody? (Our child is just a baby still, so we don't know much.)

Just a personal preference based on touring all of the schools, & feedback from Brent parents. But, I'm sure the parents of the other Hill schools have good stuff to say, too.

I've heard good things about Brent but my dc didn't do elementary on the Hill so I can't compare it to other schools. You should try to get on the listserve for Moms on the Hill (on yahoo) where there have been a lot of discussions about schools. You have to get invited by a member so look around your neighborhood for someone you know who is already on it. Every year MOTH also has a school information night which would be useful. Also there's the newhilleast listserve (on yahoo) where there has been some discussion (but much less) of the local schools.

My impression of the Hill is that there has been a huge shift towards young middle-class families staying on the Hill and getting engaged in their local elementary schools rather than moving to the suburbs. It used to be that Watkins and Peabody were the only schools I ever heard about. Now I hear about middle class families getting engaged in Brent, Tyler, Ludlow-Taylor, and Maury as well.
