Tried Adderall - didn't work, but now having some issues in school

Anonymous
Hi - we just did a trial of Adderall this weekend for our 7 yo DS and he had some bad side effects - stomach pain and crying a lot. Anyway, Dr. said to stop meds for a few days and then start Focalin tomorrow, BUT, DS has been really oppositional in school the past two days and even pushed a girl today. Neither of these behaviors are like him AT ALL. He's very sweet and not at all physical. Just busy as hell and a bit impulsive. Any thoughts? Thanks!

When did you stop the Adderall? If it was over the weekend, it would not still be in his system. It is possible that he was just not feeling like himself and had those negative behaviors.

I always do med trials over the weekend, so I would wait to start on Saturday, but that is just me.

Doubtful it has anything to do with Adderall. Stimulants last 6-8 hrs at most and many kids need to take a booster after school for homework.

Behavior issues can simply appear. My 7 yr old was acting out earlier this yr at school which he never did before which is what made us get a neuropsych and he was diagnosed with ADHD in addition to an ASD dx which he already had.

We implemented an extensive support system for DS before looking to Adderall. It's helped. I'm adding in some behavioral therapy to support where this low dose of Adderall has taken him.

It's very rare that medication works in isolation. What other supports do you have in place?

Haven't been in your shoes, sorry to hear that it has been difficult trying to figure things out. Have you thought about getting a second opinion if you aren't comfortable with the plan?

My kid had to get used to Adderall and took it for 2 weeks. Most of the side effects went away after 1 week.

Best advice so far. You other pp's sound like a bunch of drug pushers.

Glad to hear. I personally just like to look at all my options, prescription and non-prescription before moving forward. Blessings!
