we are thinking of moving to the hill with our 2 year old to make my commute more bearable (once we get into congressional day care), but how good is the area for kids? are there alot of play grounds, classes like soccer or dance or other resources? |
The Hill is great for families. As long as you seek out activities for your child and get involved in the community, you should have a great time. You also need to get onto the MOTH listserve. |
It's a wonderful place for families. Plenty of parks, lots of kids. There's Eastern Market for the weekends, libraries have story time, Capital Hill Arts Workshop and Joy of Motion offer dance, Soccer-on-the-Hill starts at age 5, plenty of schools (public & private), close to Metro and the mall and museums, lots of family restuarants. And MOTH (need an invitation from a current member to join) is a good resource. I grew up there and would love to live there now with our 3 yo DD, but housing is a little cost-prohibitive now. |
Wonderful place for families -- the only place in the district that we ever want to live. There are less Capitol Hill moms on this site than from other areas because, I think the Moms on the Hill (MOTH) listserv is already such a great resource for Hill families. As PP said, lots of great resources for children (parks/playgrounds, libraries, classes, family-friendly restaurants), walkable, plus it's close to the Mall and the museums with easy and quick driving access to Virginia 'burbs. |
I live on the Hill, am on MOTH, and LOOOOOVE the hill for kids! Mine is still baking (due in July) but I can't wait for my DC to grow up in such a fine neighborhood -- honestly I think the best in the city and I've lived everywhere. BTW, buy a good city jogging stroller with big sturdy wheels -- the cobblestones and uneven hill sidewalks are brutal on other stroller models, from what I hear! Come to the Hill! Join MOTH! You seem very nice. ![]() |
Another Hill lover here. Just to warn you, OP, we're bound to get some posts soon from people who will tell you how bad the crime is. Truth is, there is more crime here than in much of the upper NW DC. But if you are comfortable with urban living this is a great place to live! |
thanks everyone! we moved from NY, W Village, and I hate having the long commute and getting in my car for everything so the hill is very tempting. if anyone can invite me to MOTH, please do. I can send you my email if that is what you need. |
Hello there!
I am looking for school options on the Hill and would like to join the MOTH group. My ex-spouse lives on the hill and I would love it if someone would invite me to join the invite only listserve. You can reach me at akzsj@yahoo.com. Thank you so much. |
Unfortunately, I don't think that you can join MOTH until you actually live on the Hill -- which is too bad because I think it would help a lot of people decide to move here! |
i'm a MOTH...have lived on capitol hill for almost 20 years. i now have a toddler son and cannot believe the explosion in babies that i've been witnessing over the last 5 years....it's stroller gridlock over here! we love it and wouldn't live anywhere else. we commute to work and daycare via metro....only use our car for groceries and home depot/lowes. really, we park the car by saturday afternoon and don't even use it for another week! everywhere is walkable and there is a park on every corner.
to get on the MOTH listserve, you have to have a capitol hill address. Come join us! |
