Fashion- Black (sheer) pantyhose- when to wear?

Anonymous
Is wearing black pantyhose (shear) with a black skirt and black jacket not fashionable now? I see a lot of nudecolor pantyhose with black-
thanks- need to update..

I think all sheer pantyhose is out now -- opaque tights are more stylish.

I still prefer sheer no matter what's in style for everyone else. Opaque black in the spring seems kind of Goth or too wintry to me. Plus I think my legs look shorter in opaque.

I think the general consensus is it's either opaque tights or nothing. It depends on which crowd you run with. Around DC the only people you usually see wearing sheer hose are older women and those with really conservative work places.

Yeah, the black sheer hose thing is what my Mom (almost 60) does with her dark/black suits. She looks nice, but it isn't quite my 32 year old style!

OP here- I work in a very conservative place (so this isn't for casual- then it's jeans!).. management dresses conservative- lower levels are a hodge podge but not casual- i am a consultant..

so i gather it's opaque or nothing if black- otherwise, what color with black skirt suit? (conservative work)? thanks!!

12:26 here. Honestly, I would just wear some nice quality opaque tights like Wolford. But if you have to wear sheers, wear them. I would go with a really really sheer black or a really really sheer nude if you can find a good color match for your skin so it looks like you aren't wearing anything.

No sheen!

must everyone look like everyone else? Sheen, sheer, opaque...they all take their turns being in style every couple of years. Any of them can look good or bad depending on what you wear with it, or depending on what some Miranda Priestly type says is in style now. Wear what YOU like.

It's not an issue of wanting to look like other people. There are some places that mandate clothing options. When I was working on Capitol Hill, there was a Senator that made women in his office wear skirts and hose every day and this was in 2007. Uncool, but it happens. I personally find hose unbearable, but I'm ok with tights.

Mandatory skirts and hose? I have new appreciation for boss now!

Zumbamam, the OP is asking, so we are telling her what is in fashion. She can accept the advice or not, but she IS asking!

I would wear Wolford tights and if the weather is warm, nothing on my legs. If that is unacceptable, pants.

yes, but it depends on who you ask. "In style" is different according to different people. According to stylebakery.com, sheer is in:

What Are The Age Guidelines For Hosiery?
by Jennifer Davidson on December 24, 2008 | comment

Q. I'm a 27 year old who recently moved from the rolling plains of Mississippi to the foothills of the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee. The weather of course is drastically different. I would like to wear skirts to work but some seem to look better with bare legs. I feel I'm too young to wear old lady panty-hose but don't want my legs to freeze. I do wear tights but it all depends on the outfit. What are the age guidelines for hosiery? I don't want to look too old or too young for my age.

A. Whether you choose opaque black or colored tights, textured hosiery or even sheers this season, hosiery has never been more stylish. You almost can't go wrong with whatever legwear you choose. That being said, there are a few tips to remember:

1. When wearing nude hosiery, make sure it is an ultra sheer shade that matches your skin tone. The quickest road to "old lady" hosiery (as you put it) is to wear nudes that are too dark or light for your legs or are too opaque.

2. Don't wear white tights unless you are 7 years old.

3. Though sheer colored hosiery is a trend this season, it is easier to wear tights during the day instead. Unless the rest of your outfit is very fashion forward, you risk looking dated (or older) with your sheers.

If you prefer to wear bare legs and the weather isn't too cool, then by all means, go for it!

I think the general consensus, as reported here, is correct. Opaque tights or nothing. I can't remember the last time I wore "panty hose" (in any color). I think they are uncomfortable and not very attractive. As soon as it is warm enough (and with a little self tanner/body lotion on the legs) I go bare on the legs. Anything else is tights with skirts. Or, slacks/pants.

OP here- thanks everyone! this truly helps a lot!
