Photographers rates?

We were going to get photos done last year and were a bit shocked at the cost. I am willing to pay a premium but I thought that some of the top names that are mentioned time and again on this site were a bit pricey.

Does anyone know if the top prices have come down at all?

I charge $400 total for the photo session and all of your images on CD, color corrected.

No offense, pp, but $400 for some kids photos is INSANE. It's not a wedding.
I came into the same issue, and ended up doing a search on Craigs List under services. Got a bunch of wonderful photographers that charged between $100-$125 for about 45 minutes of photos and the CD with all the images. And they were great. Wonderful with the kids and nice, candid shots. I highly recommend everyone do this. I can't believe with that is going on in the economy, that there are still people paying $400 and $500 for family or kids photos.

There are still people paying $8000-$10,000 for wedding photography. There are also still people paying $450 just for a portrait session, no images included. $400 with all images on a CD sounds reasonable to me. Granted it depends on their work as well. But there are people still paying!

I am also a photographer and charge $300 for the same. But $400 is definitely fair for a very good photographer as well. We are not talking cheese-ball photography but a good, natural portrait.

And he/she is right about the weddings. Documentary coverage ranges from $4-$10,000 or more, but usually on the lower end of that.

If you feel like that is silly, there a lot of good photo students out there who will do it for less. If you are unhappy with their product then you can go to a professional photographer.

We just paid $300 for a session fee for our newborn/family pictures. Her going rate is actually less, but we paid more because she is from out of state. She used to work here, but moved and will come back if she has at least 3 shoots set up in the area. A friend of mine also did a shoot with her and the photographer set up the 3rd shoot with a previous client.

We absolutely LOVE her and she did our 3yo's newborn photos and we wanted the same look. We were confident about her work and know we didn't have to worry if the photos would come out exactly as we would like.

This is a once in a lifetime event and photos are very important to me.

I have to agree with 12:03, $400 to me seems really high.
We used our wedding photographer 2 weekends ago for a short portrait session in our local park with our 2 year old soon. We paid $150 with the CD. Couldn't ask for better pictures. Do you research, you don't have to spend a fortune to get good quality.

For commercial purposes, I buy photography from anywhere between $200-$400 per photo, and have paid photographers $2000 per assignment. I wouldn't spend this much to photo my family, but photographers are artists running a business. Some will be in higher demand, have different styles/techniques, so there will be a range in price as well. It all depends on what you want.

Yes, I second the Marc Cohn recommendation. marccohnphotography.com
He's is an excellent photographer and very reasonably priced. One of D.C.'s best kept secrets, til now : )
I hope he stays affordable. Great guy to work with. We plan to use him again.
