Help! Two Ten yr. old Male Cats Fighting Left and Right

Anonymous
I have two Male cats who are 10 yrs. of age. They have both been fixed/neutered/spayed?. Whichever is for Males.

Anyway, they get into this vicious fights which have been happening more and more as of late. Also, they seem to be occurring late at night, usually after ten PM, but they also occur during the day. I guess it's the nightly fights that really affect me as I have to get up early the next morning.

First of all, why do they fight with each other? I notice one cat will stick his paw at the other and that will initiate a fight sometimes.

And I know they are not playing because there is intense tail-wagging and lots of hissing/growling going on along with fur on the ground afterward. However so far, no blood drawn.

I usually yell and separate them when they fight. Or if it is a lot of fighting, I will spray them with a water bottle. I hate doing this, but it's my last resort.

At night I have no option.

Both cats HATE closed doors and will whine and scratch at any closed door which would mean = no sleep for me either.

Please help.

I don't think they have any health issues. They eat and use their litter boxes normally.

If you cannot separate them at night I think you may need to consider getting one of them re homed. The fighting isn't a phase that will go it will probably only get worse.

Put them both in separate bathrooms to sleep. Yes, they won't sleep and neither will you, at first, but it will become routine and they will get used to it.

You have to wait out the period where they hate being in the bathroom to sleep. You have to do it every night, every single night, do not waiver. If you waiver, you give them intermittent reinforcement and then it will take them much longer to get used to the new situation.

How much individual attention do the cats get? Any chance one is sick? Is one starting the actual fighting more often than the other?

After vet ruled out sickness and/or pain, I hired a behaviorist to come to our house... He had us give the 'bully' cat extra treats, love, and attention to stop him from beating up on the other cat. It worked in our situation.

I have two cats(m/f) that I "inherited" from DD. They can't stand each other, even after 5+ years together. I have 3 litter boxes well away from each other and 2 feeding bowls well away from each other. The battles seemed to be getting worse, so I tried a Feliway odor plug in.
When a cat is happy and content, it rubs its face on things - you, couch, chair, etc. There are pheromes that are left there. The idea of the Feliway is that it is releasing the "happy" pheromes into the air and calming them down.
I've only been doing it for a week, which is too soon to tell, according to the inserts that come with it. They haven't fought since I got it, so it might work.

Interesting PP.

I have never heard of this. Can you tell me where to get one and the cost?

Thx for your response.

Do a Google shop search for "Feliway diffuser" or something similar. It should pop something up.
The diffuser and 1 refill cost me ~$28.
They sell them at Petsmart for ~$50.

Thanks for responding, however I simply cannot re-home either cat.

I have had them for ten years already + am very emotionally attached to them. I love them so much.
