OP -- look in Cheverly MD in Prince Georges County. It is on the orange line. Capitol South is about a 20 minute metro ride and you can walk to metro from many places. People here are renting out basement apartments, etc. The local public school is Spellman -- they have been getting great test scores and have a fantastic new principal that a lot of parents are really happy with.

Looks like 3-br homes here are renting for about $1600. If you could find a roommate or something, that might be an option. The apartment complexes nearby are in your price range but I don't think they are very safe unfortunately.

I'm pretty sure I just saw an ad for a two-bedroom apartment in Alexandria (Landmark area) for $1,200 a month. You might want to check out that part of Alexandria. You can catch the metro at Van Dorn. A lot of those apartments have shuttles to the station.

I have tried the coabode.com site and find that perhaps because it is relatively new it seems to be difficult to find a home to share. I am still hopeful as I have only begun the process.

As an aside: my spouse and I have no hopes of saving our marriage and separation is inevitable. Our lease is up in August and I would like to 1. Stay within the Bethesda/Chevy Chase/Upper NW area and 2. cannot do it on my budget. I don't know if I am dreaming or unrealistic but it kills me to think that I may have to rip my two children 6 and 4 out of this neighborhood and away from their friends, sports activities, etc. I know that ''you do what you have to'' but I cannot fathom living in an area that coincides with my budget. Find it prentious if you would like. Is it realistic to find someone to share a house with short-term? Has anyone actually done this?
