Exercises when pulled back/neck muscles - and, when do you go to the doctor?

Anonymous
Pulled something in my back/neck last week when I fell asleep nursing the baby at 3 a.m. My head was hunched over to the right a bit when I awoke and it's killing me! Seems to be worst in the a.m., get a little better as the day wears on. Anyway- any thoughts on what I could do in addition to stretches to help keep my exercise track record going and to help work through it? I'm not sure at what point I go to the doctor, or if the doctor would even help. thoughts?

Ouch. You might want to go see an ortho if it's still bothering you. I've got all kinds of back issues, and I've been to both a chiropractor and an ortho on separate occasions for the same problem. The chiro helped (I'm not in the camp that assigns them a badge of automatic quackery), but the ortho and PT helped more, better, and lasted longer. It might simply be a matter of getting the right corrective exercised from a PT.

I definitely agree to get a referral to a pt if the problem continues. I had a similar situation and was able to self -treat with simple stretches, application of warmth and aleve. See your dr. right away if you develop numbness or weakness in your arms.

I was also going to suggest to add warmth to it in addition to stretching. A good massage therapist should be able to help you out as well.

If it's still really hurting after a week, I'd call a doctor. I've had bad neck pain periodically, and on occasion my doctor has prescribed muscle relaxers to help. The best medicine, though, has been standing directly under the spray of a hot shower. My doctor also cautioned me against trying to "fix" it on my own - no stretching my neck thinking I could work out the kink as that could make the problem worse.
