What Gives?

I am very confused about the 30-Day Shred.

I mean, I am a big exerciser. A big exerciser that wants to lose 25 pounds (which would make me the same weight and height as Jillian Michael's). I didn't really expect to lose 20 pounds in a month. And I didn't really buy that I could do the program using only 1 workout a day. Yes, it is intense exercise. But not THAT intense.

I've been doing all three workouts, every day, for 2 weeks. I've lost inches, but not a single pound. And I am watching what I eat. No strict diet, but eating less + exercising more & more intensely SHOULD = some weight loss by now. I am one jean size smaller. But I weigh the same.

And no, I'm not exaggerating when I say I do all three. Level I is a warm-up for me at this point. I use up to 13 lb. weights. I can push through Level 3 with minimal modification. This means that I cannot yet do all of the mountain-climbers (I can do about half) or the jumping lunges (I follow Anita).

Everything else, I do. At the end of the hour I feel wonderful. Every night I sleep like a baby.

Not. One. Single. Pound.

HELP!

You are gaining muscle but losing fat and FAT weighs less than MUSCLE. There are two other threads on this 30 Day Shred also, maybe check them our for other opinions.

You should feel great about yourself.

You've lost inches? That's fabulous!

And like the PP said, you've gained muscle.

PP is right. I see too many women set super high weight loss goals and then get frustrated when they don't meet them right away. Stay positive and give yourself snaps for losing inches.

I don't know what's involved with the Shred, but when my students hit a plateau, I get them to crank up the intensity of their movements to a more challenging level. Keep your core engaged, center of gravity lower, and put more snap into each movement.

Also, make sure your drinking enough water.

Thanks. But I'm not feeling good about myself. I feel a little chubby. And I'm worried it will give me cancer.

I do enjoy the endorphin high and the good night's sleep and the change in the way my clothes fit. But my BMI is too high -- whether it be fat or muscle -- and I have to get it down.

Jillian Michaels just released two new videos -- sort of as an answer to the demand for a "shred" that would take more than 20 minutes and give a fuller workout, while still providing intensity. Maybe those will help.

I'll let you know.

You could see a nutritionist and change what/how you are eating. I am trying this now and trying to lose 10 pounds. Yes, I get funny stares for being in her office, but it really does help. I was doing (mostly) fine on calories but eating all the wrong things.

I'm just starting week 3 of this but my DH says he already sees a change (and he is a fitness and diet NUT, so he is not just saying that). I try not to weigh every day because I do not want to become a slave to my scale.

I do a different fitness program, but bought the Shred in case my current program is not doing it for me.

You've been doing the shred for TWO weeks. Give it a few more.

If you're clothes fit better already, then you are already ON the path to lowering your BMI. Just stay ON the path, and don't give yourself crazy timelines...you'll go nuts. Tomorrow's another 500 calories lost so just keep it up girl!

Is the shred really hard? How long does it take?

It depends on your fitness level going in.

Her promise is that you can lose "up to" 20 pounds in 30 days if you are diligent with her exercise program and with a (or her) diet plan.

It is three 20-minute workouts, each one getting progressively more challenging. So you start on Level 1 and stay there until you feel ready for Level 2. It's only 20 minutes per day.

But I do not think that 20 minutes of exercise a day is adequate for me -- I would be cutting back -- so I am doing all three levels every day. That is a hard work-out, but that is not recommended for everyone.

I think the people likely to lose 20 pounds in 30 days are the ones who are: a) diligent about the program, and b) have more than 20 pounds to lose. Reports of losing 10 pounds are more common.

It does change your body composition for the better. You build muscle and this looks better than fat.

But yes, it can be a challenge. Since it is only 20-minutes, she really pushes you through every second. No rest.

Jillian has two new videos -- one is an hour of cardio and one is about 40 minutes of weights. Similar exercises as the Shred, but less intensity, for a longer time. Some people might like that better. But then you're committing 1+ hours instead of 20 minutes.

Her whole premise is based on metabolic training -- jump training. Moving big muscles with the small ones simulataneously instead of in isolation.

Looking at here is pretty good motivation for me. And I like her personality.
