knees always hurt

Anonymous
hi:

i am 34 yo and in ok shape. my knees are always aching and feel stiff. i am going to the doc next week, but i thought i would look for advice here.

some particulars:

don't have a car, so i usually walk 1 to 4 miles a day. about half of that time, i am pushing a stroller.

i go to the gym about 2 days a week and do low impact machines (stairmaster, elliptical). i never jog and haven't for 5 years. i did jog a few days a week for about 7 to 8 years before i quit.

i am 10 lbs overweight.

i sit at an office job during the day.

i am wearing sneakers 90% of the time (saucony).

any ideas? i know dropping the extra weight will help. could it be from being relatively flat-footed?

It probably has to do with the way you walk/your flat-footedness. The orthopedist will be able to recommend the appropraite shoe or insole and do anything else like give you a cortisone shot that may be necessary.

Well, I'm not a doctor or a trainer, but my first thought is that you just need to do the right strengthening exercises. If you strengthen the muscles around the knee, you'll put less stress on them.

I would talk to a (certified) trainer at your gym who really understands anatomy. Or look into a few sessions with a personal trainer who can evaluate you more fully. It could be that you're using the gym equipment in a way that is exacerbating the problem.

Could be signs of arthritis. Does it run in your family? Do you notice this more as you get older or when it is cold?

You may have some mild arthritis. The dr's visit and possible orthotics are great places to start. I have had similar issues and one thing that worked great for me are the Dr. Scholl's Gel insoles--they are great shock absorbers. I always feel it in my knees the next morning when I've worn shoes without the inserts! Also, make sure you replace your shoes frequently so that you are maintaining maximum shock absorption--a store like Runner's World has oodles of choices and might be able to direct you to a shoe with maximum shock absorption. Ask your dr. about glucosamine/chondroitin and /or fish oil supplements. I cannot do Stairmaster--it kills my knees. I do mostly interval workouts on a recumbent bike at my gym. Good luck, hope this was helpful.

do you stretch? Limber up by stretching and self massage your legs from heel to glute. Yoga is great for stiff muscles.

OP, I had achy knees and I thought it was just arthritis and that I was condemned to taking 12 ibuprofen every day and sitting on the aisle at movie theaters. I was seeing an orthopedist for ACL repair and he had nothing to say about, just that cleaning my knee for the repair would help. I'm fairly athletic, do the elliptical for 30 mins 4 times a week, weights once a week, and stretch afterwards every time.

Following the ACL repair, I started having back trouble (must have been the impact of having an ACL after 30 years of doing without) and my physical therapist gave me some back exercises, which I started doing religiously. I was amazed when one day I realized that my knees hadn't hurt in a long time. It was the BACK EXERCISES which kept my knees from hurting! It wasn't the arthritis at all!

I tell you this because I love my ortho guy and all but he's a surgeon and he knows cutting, not stretching.

Good luck, OP, I know what a drag it is to live with pain in your knees. I hope it gets better!

I have "lateral tracking" knees. I think it means that the ligaments that are supposed to hold it all together aren't quite the right shape. So they're sore and stiff a lot of the time. There is surgery for it, but I would have to get a lot more miserable than I am now before considering it. I just make do with ibuprofin, on a schedule.

Do some yoga, stretching. I have knees that hurt on and off and get worse if I run. But I found some good stretches and pain has been improving gradually. The best stretches for me are the ones that stretch calfs. Also sitting in hero pose http://www.yogajournal.com/poses/490

Hope you feel better

I have found that a particular pair of shoes, even if they fit right, can make my knees hurt. Try a new pair and see if that helps.
