Does anyone have tips on how to fly with an infant? We're going to put her in her car seat on the plane and give her a bottle during take off and landing to help with her ears. We don't use strollers so is there a way to cart the seat around the airport? We also plan on packing most of her supplies for the trip in a carry-on in case the luggage gets lost.
Any other suggestions? Heidi-rose |
You can use a Pack Back carrier or some other type for the carseat. Definitely pack more supplies than you think you'll need in case there are flight delays. Both my boys when they were babies slept really well and didn't require a whole lot of entertainment. I did pack their favorite stroller toy and blanket and other than that they were fine. |
We used the baby bjorn when we travelled and found it to be extremely useful and easy. |
How long is the flight?
Assuming there are 3 of you traveling, make sure your someone is with you in security. You have to put everything (except the baby) thru the conveyor belt. It certainly is not fun! When I flew with my then 2 month old my hubby got in another security line and I was not pleased with him! For the car seat either my husband or I carried it. It wasn't that bad. If we flew a lot with my son I'd consider getting some sort of carrier, but we've only taken 2 trips with him. On the plane, the child seat will have to go next to the window if the configuration of the plane is a one aisle plane. If the plane has two aisles and you are in the middle section, the seat will have to go in the middle. Install the car seat like you would install it in your car (facing backwards if under 1, forward if over 1). I traveled with my son at 2 months and at 15 months. 2 months was a much easier time to travel with him! Check into liquid requirements on the TSA website before you go....when my son was 2 months they banned all liquids literally the day before our flight so we had to buy water on the plane to mix his formula. And finally, if for any reason your child is sick - DO NOT TAKE HIM/HER! I flew to CA for work in October and had a miserable cold. My ears hurt me so bad when we were landing. Since I have now experienced that pain, I will never fly with my son if he is sick. |
Thanks for the tips!
The flight is about 2 hours (assuming no delays) with a 4.5 month old. We'll be on a single aisle plane most likely. Unfortunately we'll have to take her even if she is sick (unless a Dr. says otherwise). We're moving to MD and have no other options for transporting her (for various reasons- trust me, we looked into them!). I know my DH will be sitting next to her, I don't fly too well so he'll be keeping us both calm (poor guy!). |
4.5 months isn't too bad. They are not too mobile then. I went on a 3 1/2 hour plane trip with DS at 5 months and we did the following:
- tore up the free magazines - played with the plastic cups that the flight attendants gave - walked up and down the aisles once - napped (b/c we time all flights to correspond to nap time). Don't worry, it's not a long flight. You'll be fine! |
