What do you keep the heat on in the house?

I'm a SAHM w/ a crawling 9 month old. Just wondering how warm you keep the house. Seems I am always cold and baby is warm. Is there a good temp to stay at?

We set the thermostat at 69 during the day and 67 at night. If my son's hands or feet are cold, I give him another layer of clothes. I always have a sweater and slippers on, myself. I can also tell if he's warm enough by taking his temperature. It drops a bit if he's cold, like down into the 97's.

72, but this house is so drafty that it's probably around 70
a bit lower at night while everyone is snug in bed. My kids kick the covers off so we have the heating panels in their rooms.

our home was built in the late 40s very small (about 1200 sq. ft.) brick and cinderblock construction and plaster walls. i think this makes a difference as far as heat and air co. retention, anyway, we keep our heat (gas) at 62/64 during the day and about the same 62/60 in the evenings, we may bump it up to 66 on colder days such as over this weekend but it gets too hot in here. we have 'newer' windows but older doors that let in drafts it is usually very comfortable in here for the most part

We just got a small dog, and I'm wondering what the temperature in the house should be during the day when we're not home.

at least 67 for the dog, i think.

68 day and night. Our problem is that our furnace is on the second floor near the master bedroom (we are in a 2 story condo) so the upstairs gets extremely warm while the downstairs gets extremely cold. The thermostat is on the first floor. I sometimes use a space heater to warm up the downstairs to 70-71 before bed so the furnace isn't running all night/keeping the upstairs too warm.

64. I always have kept it cool, because I am cheap. My kids always run hot, and so do I. The biggest problem I have is that my DH doesn't like clothing and runs around in shorts all year long.

71, all day and night b/c DC is home with a nanny. When we're all out, we leave it on 68 for the pooch.

This is the OP. I feel better now. I am home all day and depending on how cold it is outside I keep it between 68 and 72. Sometimes I am just cold. Our electric bill is usually between $160 and $200. Does cutting it back to 66 or 65 cut the bill drastically? I don't think DC is cold but I sure am.

Check windows and doors for drafts around the edges. It's easy to stop this with cheap weather stripping you can buy at Home Depot. Also and digital programmable thermostat can be bought there for relatively cheap and will help regulate your home's temperature (more energy efficient b/c it doesn't fluctuate so much). This fall we replaced the windows on our drafty old 40's house (expensive!) but it made a huge difference in our bills and the snug-as-a-bug factor. Lastly, lots of cold air sneaks in your clothes dryer's vent so try closing the laundry room door.
