Baby with a cold

Anonymous
It is his 10 month birthday today and he's congested, phlegmy and basically miserable (no fever though, just your basic head-cold that mommy is just now kicking). Now that baby cold meds are officially out and probably never did much good anyway, what else do you guys do to make little ones more comfortable? Are the Vicks plug-ins any good?

My pediatrician recommended a warm-mist humidifier for congestion, and said to just let the rest run its course. The humidifier definitely helped.

run the hot shower, and take him in the bathroom with the door closed, the steam will help the phlegm to loosen up.

A warm bath, humidifier in the room, lots of fluids and lots of saline drops. It's so hard when they feel bad. Poor guy!

Also see if you can get him to sleep on an incline. I roll a towel up and prop it under the crib mattress.

We just went through this last week (actually the last 10 days!).

My 8 month DD got her first cold - low grade fever, sniffles, congested, sneezing, coughing, bleary eyed, etc. I finally took her to the doc. at day 5 because she wouldn't even sleep through the night.

PPs have already stated humidifiers,i allow baby to sleep on incline (I propper her up in the boppy), keep her hydrated, saline mist, etc.

I used the aspirator eventhough she HATED it, but it worked and helped clear her up. My sister suggested rubbing some Vicks on a bandaid and sticking it across her chest on her onesie. It didn't work for us, but it did for my sister's kids.

DD finally got over it, but it was the longest 10 days of sleepless nights or crying ever. The worst part is you can't do much for them but snuggle.

Also, if his chest is really congested you can ask your pedi about a nebulizer, that will help with all that phlegm

someone suggested to me rubbing vicks on the feet and then putting socks on over them. Seemed to help them sleep better than the previous night...I'm sure it works off holistic reflexology principles, which may be weird to some, but it doesn't hurt to try. I put Vicks it in the humidifer, or sometimes eucalyptus oil. Other than that, up the Vitamin C, everything else the PPs said and, I also put warm diluted green tea mixed with juice in the bottle. Definitely lots of snuggles!

OP here -- so many good ideas. Our little guy hates the aspirator (or even for us to wipe his face -- I'm sure his nose is getting tender. :cry What's a nebulizer? Also how do you up the vitamin C when he's too young for citrus? He nurses at night so I can up my own C content, but anything else? We'll make sure he's getting hydrated during the day too....and I like the Vicks under socks and the green tea ideas. Y'all are great.

One thing I have tried that works well, and it works sort of like Vicks. Get some peppermint oil (like from Whole Foods) and put a couple drops in the bathtub and let him play in there for a bit. The peppermint helps decongest, along with the warmth of the bath. Hope he feels better soon!

If we use "Runny Noses" a saline drop, it seems to helpe get rid of the cold quicker... otherwise all that crap just gets stuck up there. YUCK! I hope your little one is feeling better soon. It gets so much easier when they can blow their noses!

V. useful! My 6-m-o has his first cold and it stinks! I am worried it might turn into an infection.

If he's got green mucus I'd take him in to the ped to make sure his ears are okay.

Thanks, PP. No green mucous yet, but I am taking him to the ped since the phlegm seems to be moving south. Just want to make sure we're not dealing with an infection. Ai yai yai.
