Why do we procrastinate?

Anonymous
I feel much much better about myself and my life when I work hard and am productive. So why then do I continue to kill time on my phone and places like dcum, FB, Pinterest? I annoy myself but only snap out of it once in awhile.

Anyone successfully turn around a propensity for procrastination?? I've been like this all my life. I get stuff done, but only at the last minute.

Hi OP. I meant to respond to you sooner....

There is an option value in waiting. Meaning, before you complete something, valuable information may come forth that would improve how you tackle a problem. So, wait until you have just enough time to get it done.

Set a timer. Work for 50min, take a 10min break. Whatever ratio works for you.

When I have to start on a very unpleasant task I'll say to myself that I only have to start it, only have to work 10 minutes at it. Once I get going, I usually don't notice the time and work to complete it.

I read this as "Why do we procreate?" An entirely different question. ...

+1

I read that if you were rewarded by procrastinating ONCE, it's enough of a reward to make you keep doing it (even if the next 10 times, procrastination didn't work out in your favor.)

I procrastinate too

I think sometimes you have to force yourself to do something. Writing lists can help. I love to write lists.

I procrastinate due to fear of failure.

I procrastinate more when I am tired.

Me too. Particularly true with job applications, since I have often failed to get chosen for a job.

Procrastination: ------> Self-imposed Hell.

My own definition.

I procrastinate so I don't spend more time than is necessary on a task. It helps me combat my perfectionist tendencies.

I don't.

Yep. Although I've never framed it quite like this. I always think I could spend more time on a task to make it better. But, I do well in my career and at school, so you're right that whatever time I feel guilty about wasting was likely unnecessary to start.

I seem to do my best work when I am up against a crazy deadline, so that causes me to procrastinate. I used to be a reporter and still get something out of the "deadline" concept, even though now it is generally self-imposed by procrastination.

The science has actually been done on this, OP. There is a formula, a book explaining it, I recommend it. (the procrastination equation)

For a long time I had this on my desktop. It is a cheat sheet of techniques for altering the parameters of the equation.
