What are some good, warm preschools with morning programs in the Rockville area?

Hi -- we are open to exploring play-based philosophies or "flexible/warm" montessorri's for our son, who is 2, for next year. I felt I had a decent not-so-short-list for the close-in MD burbs of DC (Lowell, Outdoor Nursery, School for Friends, Harbor, maybe Takoma Children's for play-based, and Apple, Manor or Franklin for Montessori).....

BUT it looks like we will be moving from Chevy Chase out to Rockville in the next 6 months and I'll need to start my research all over again. Any folks that can help me identify schools similar to those listed above but closer to Rockville town center?

If you interested in a co-op, I've been very pleased with Rockville Presbyterian Co-Op (www.rpcns.org). My DD absolutely loves it there and it's within walking distance of the Town Center.

Thanks PP -- two questions. Is it a non-secular school? ("Presbyterian" in the name gives me pause and I should have added up-front that we're mostly ruling out church affiliated programs.) Also, how significant is the co-op commitment? I like the idea, and we are moving partly so I can downshift my work schedule which might allow me to participate more, but I'll still be a largely WM.

It's a non-secular school even though it has Presbyterian in the title (I ruled out religious programs as well when I did my search).

The co-oping responsibilities depend. In the 2 yo classroom, you would be expected to co-op twice a month plus another job. Some jobs are more time consuming than others.

Other play-based preschools in the area - Rockville Nursery School, Early Childhood Center, Geneva Day School.

Montessoris - Norbeck, Franklin, Primary Montessori

Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head right now.

Children's Learning Center in Rockville is an excellent play-based program in a very warm and nurturing environment.

Both of my children are at Millian Methodist Preschool or will be as of next year, and we are really happy with it. It is in Rockville just off of Veirs Mill and Parkland, if that helps in terms of location.

To answer the questions you raised earlier (regarding another preschool), Millian is not a co-op, but they do ask for parent help with some events, eg. the book fair, staff appreciation dinner, etc. However, that is strictly voluntary and you can decide to what extent you want to commit to things. Also, the preschool is housed in the education building of the Methodist church, but there doesn't seem to be any involvement from the church in the school (though I should say they do a nativity play at Christmas, etc. so it isn't completely secular). For what it is worth, my husband and I have attended church there in the a few times in the past and for multiple reasons, we would never consider becoming a member of the congregation there, but are totally happy with the preschool.

The preschool itself is terrific - the teachers are so warm and loving, and my son just loves it. If you want any more information, let me know. I think they just started registration for the general public this week.

We really like Franklin. While we only know the teachers in DD class they are very kind and gentle.

DC is in 3s at Georgetown Hill Early School in Potomac. They have one in Rockville too, and I would expect the same warm loving environment there because the administration is cross school. We love it.

Definitely look at Rockville Community Nursery School!! Great program, wonderful community of families, excellent teachers, lots of flexibility in terms of the class combinations they offer, very affordable.
