At several points over the past week or so, my 3-year-old has had swelling above or below one or both eyes. The swelling usually looks like a bug bite. Sometimes it is preceded or accompanied by dark circles under the eyes. We have been treating with Benadryl, and the swelling goes away, usually within an hour. In the spring she had a similar reaction, probably to some kind of pollen, in which her eyes were almost swollen shut. This reaction is less extreme and more intermittent. Her teacher has suggested it may be an allergy to mold. We'll take her to the ped, but before agreeing to lots of testing (if that is the recommendation), I'd like to hear from other people with experience with this type of reaction or with mold allergies. Were you able to isolate the cause without testing? Did you find the reaction got worse over time? Have you been able to control it with occasional OTC medication, or have you proceeded to desensitization? FWIW, my eyes have also been irritated from time to time over the past few days, but it is more of a stinging sensation (probably because I wear contacts) and I haven't had a true allergic reaction.
Thanks for any advice. |
The dark circles under the eye are almost definitely allergic shiners, meaning she is allergic to something, you're right.
Please don't be afraid of allergy testing, it's easy and not painful. Itchy maybe, but not at all traumatic. In your case I would definitely have it done so that I know what I'm dealing with. That's a good thing to know so you can anticipate when DD might be heading into a season (pollen, ragweed, and mold in the fall (leaves) and winter). And no, you can't isolate the cause without testing. You can only guess. I have a pretty strong allergy to mold and I deal with it by using OTC meds when I feel symptoms coming on. It's not that big of a deal. |
Are the dark circles always with the swollen eye(s)? It could be two different things - dark circles can indicate over-tired or iron deficiency.
When the eye reaction does occur - where are you? Outside, in the car (mold from the a/c/heater vent), in a certain room (mold behind wall from unsuspecting water line?), from the carpet (residue from vacuum?). Any other symptoms - respiratory distress, skin rash, excessive rubbing, pus? |
as a child allergic to mold I beg
TEST YOUR CHILD! the doc will tell you all the kid is allergic too and you'll save him/her and yourself from dangerous situations. |
At what age is allergy testing accurate? I heard it is not very valid when they are to young. |
My sister battled mold allergies all her life growing up in this area. It wasn't until she moved away to the southwest that her symptoms completely stopped. I'm not saying that's the solution for you, but apparently the Mid-Atlantic has a high mold count. |
