I don't have school age children, but just came in from running errands. It is downright treacherous out there! And schools in the district and alexandria are still open? How are these kids going to get home safely? Looks like more ice is headed this way this afternoon.
I am worried about these little ones getting home. |
I feel the same way. I keep running to the window to see what's going on out there. It always amazes me that schools close with the threat of snow or ice and now that it is snowing....they're open. Go figure. ![]() |
I dunno...I'm from Boston and this would raise any eyebrows there! |
My husband says that there are cars slipping and sliding all over the road. Looks like Alexandria is closing at 1 pm, but the District schools are still open. |
You guys are better prepared and more experienced with this stuff. ![]() |
DC ROADS - I just drove from Adams Morgan to New York Ave and 12th and roads are actually pretty good. Plus not a ton traffic as I think folks are trying to not drive so that is good for school buses. Visibility was also really good. |
The problem is not the itty bit of snow that is on the ground - its the fact the local governments are totally inept at keeping the streets clean, don't they watch the weather channel. I spend three years in Boston and 20 in NYC - this is nothing. |
If DC closes its schools, about 70 percent of schoolchildren don't get their hot breakfasts and lunches. (I'm not entirely sure of the exact percentage, but it's very high.)
They try to keep the schools open so that children don't go hungry. |
Most public school kids in DC walk to school and it was NOT bad out there this morning (and I say this at 7 months pregnant with a 46lb dog who pulls at the leash). I drove Rock Creek Parkway down to Georgetown at 8:45 this morning and the roads were nothing but wet, although that did not stop many people from driving as though there were two and a half feet of snow still on the road. Seriously, there's not even an inch of snow out there yet - and at least in DC, it's still just snow. "Treacherous" is a serious overstatement at this point! |
What about the fact that it is going to continue snowing and the roads will invariably get worse-if the kids go to school don't they have to get home at some point? |
FALLS CHURCH IS CLOSING IN THE AFTERNOON. |
They are closing now! I don't think there will be school tomorrow with the forecast calling for freezing rain tonight. |
Not an overstatement. I am in Alexandria. There were two minor accidents on our street an hour ago. It is indeed slippery on the untreated roads! |
The problem is not the snow or weather, it's how people react to it and the fact that they don't know how to handle snow. They drive too slow and irratic and cause accidents. Or they drive normally, which in most cases is too fast while trying to email on blackberry, apply mascara and eat breakfast at the same time. I really think that if people would drive the speed limit, leave more room between cars for breaking, and leave the multitasking for the office, everyone would be ok. Unfortunately, I don't think this is realistic in DC. |
This may not be the kind of weather that you see in Boston or NYC, but the drivers here aren't used to such conditions, and inevitably there's some newbie who can't handle his/her car in the snow. Just makes everything more dangerous.
Daycare director told me she was going to wait until noon to make the call whether to close early (we're in DC). Mama wants a snow day! |
