I like Deb Talan and just read A Thousand Splendid Suns; Loving Frank; and Expecting Adam. The first a hard read, but good; the second, kind of a soap opera but interesing historical fiction (Frank Lloyd Wright) and the last amazing in my opinion. Deb Talan is this really cool woman vocalist. . .anyway, others out there with similar taste with recommendations?

| Expecting Adam is a memoir by Martha Beck of her pregnancy with her son, Adam, who has Down's. She was living a pressure cooker academic life at Harvard when she became pregnant. It's about how she comes to terms with it, societal expectations of her decision to go ahead with the pregnancy, and most of all, what Adam has meant to her family's life. I can't do justice to it in my description. It's totally not political or ideological in any way, just a beautiful, compassionate, personal story. I read it when I was single, with no interest in pregnancy, children or special needs and was still incredibly moved. |
