my DS is 8 weeks old tomorrow. he wakes up congested and when he sleeps he is "noisy" with his breathing. I took him to the doctor a few weeks ago worried he had a cold but they said his chest was clear and suggested we get a humidifier for the room & have him sleep on a bit of an incline....that breastfedding & formula can cause some congestion. I use the suction bulb with him but nothing really comes out....is this "noisy" breathing & congestion normal for an infant? I am thinking of taking him back to the doctor tomorrow to be on the safe side...
TIA... |
My son actually had the same thing he was experiencing alot of congestion and my doctor had me cut out dairy from my diet. Yes, all dairy was restricted! I thought it would be hard but since I was breastfeeding my doctor told me that we are not able to digest dairy products properly and that they actually cause a lot of mucus. As adults we have built up a certain immunity to it but for infants its like a foreign agent in the body. So, i suggest cutting out dairy and using Soy based formula to help your little one out.it helped my son out significantly. He has not had any congestion for months. Hope this helps! |
You might also try some saline drops in his nose before you suction - just to loosen things up some. |
did you have a csection baby--I had this same issue and was told that it can be something that is exaserbated in csections due to all the fluids not getting pushed out during the delivery process--have no idea if this is true but this is what I was told from a lot of people. |
The breathing is normal but if it makes you feel better then go to the doctor for sure. My 15 month old had that same sound for weeks. I went to the dr. twice to have it checked out and he was fine. I had him on the incline with the humidifier and also used saline spray in his nose when it seemed when he wasn't draining. |
OP - thank you all so much for the advice - you all are great. He was a C-section baby & that may explain his seemingly constant congestion. This was our 2nd visit today to the doc to address the congestion (first time mom). Today again they said nothing in his chest & it was just congestion in his nose but now this evening he does seem to have a cold...runny nose, etc. So I am using the saline drops and made his mattress incline. So hard to see him uncomfortbale at such a little age. I know it is the first of many colds though...just keeping a close eye on him since he is still so young. |
If it makes you feel better, see if you can do shifts having him sleep on your chest. It's what I did with my little one when he was sick and uncomfortable. |
Our DD is going through her second cold, the trick for sleeping that we used was to put her in her car seat to sleep. It's more upright so it helps drainage. We didn't have any problems switching her back to her crib.
We also would sit with her in the bathroom while the other person took a warm shower. |
This is so smart! I wish I had thought of this when my DS was this small. He is a toddler now, and I could probably still do this, actually in addition to the saline and such. Thanks. |
