I am looking for an overnight camp for my 10 year old son. He would like to go close by for no more that two weeks. Are there any great sleep away camps that are somewhat local that you could recommend for this age? |
It's a Jewish camp, not sure what you are interested in, but we have been very happy with camp airy, outside of Frederick. |
It is not local, but my cousin's boys really like Camp Lincoln in Minnesota and they have two week sessions. You put them on a non-stop flight and the camp picks them up at the airport, so it is actually easier than any of the more local camps. |
Also not local, but Camp Seagull is great.

Camp Hidden Meadows - our 10 year old did last year and enjoyed it. |
Camp Friendship in Palmyra VA |
Camp Letts, a YMCA camp. |
Mine is going to Hidden Meadows. It'll be his first year but the reviews are great. You can go one week, two weeks, any term you want. It's four hours from DC. I've emailed with the director several times and he's been really responsive and kind. |
My 11 year old enjoyed Hidden Meadows last summer but does not recommend it for more than 1 week unless your child enjoys lots of down time. The weekends are very unstructured. Basically free time while watching old campers leave and new ones come. We decided to look for something with longer sessions this year. |

+1 Our boys have gone for years. They love it there. Sandy Hill is nice, too (but much larger). |
Camp Twin Creeks in West Virginia -- fantastic Director and counselor. My son loved it! |
Omg I went here 25 years ago and it was great. I'm sure it's changed but I really enjoyed my time there. |
My 9 year old went to Camp Roanoke for a week last year and loved it. Going back for 3 weeks this year. |
