I'm normally a petite figure (5'3 and 110 pounds). I'm 14-week now and I've already gained 12 pounds with my #2. I know my boobs have gotten HUGE during the past 3 months and probably half of the 12 pounds are on my boobs ![]() |
Don't diet in the true sense. Just eat healthy foods. Focus on proteins vs. fat/sugar. It will work itself out. I truly believe as long as we we nutrient dense foods while pregnant, our bodies do what they are supposed to do with respect to weight gain. |
I agree with PP. I gained about 10 lbs during my first 8 weeks (was 130 lbs pre-pregnancy, at 5'6"), then tapered off and now, at 16 weeks, am at 143. I was feeling "thick" in my waist (read: fat) until about a week ago, and now am starting to feel rounder/more pregnant/less fat. I'm eating healthy, and I feel like I'm eating a ton, but it isn't all converting to pounds. Just eat healthy and do safe exercise (frankly, I'm not getting enough), but definitely don't diet. |
Just eat healthy, but don't diet. And try not to stress over the weight -- it is what it is. I gained more weight with my second pregnancy as well -- significantly more -- yet I hadn't changed my eating habits since the first pregnancy. Some things you just can't control. I ended up with a nine and a half pound baby and had a ridiculous amount of fluid/water weight -- which was a good thing b/c DC needed the fluid so he could move around ![]() BTW, I lost all the weight eventually simply by eating well (ie: no formal exercise -- who has the time?) |
I am normally slim and athletic (5'10"/150) but gained at least 15 pounds during the first trimester, both pregnancies, and with severe morning sickness. Both pregnancies I tried to eat fairly healthy, though more so the second time. And tried to stay somewhat active (though not as much the second time, other than chasing first child). Gained the SAME amount of weight (fine by doctors, horrifying to me).
In other words, don't diet. Just try to eat well and keep healthy. My OB told me just today that some woman just put on more than others, sort of how their body reacts to all the pregnancy hormones (he said this assuming efforts to eat decently--ie not mainlining McDonald's). I gained at least 50 lbs both pregnancies and lost all of it and more without diet, just exercise and breastfeeding. In short, don't worry about it---there is so much other stuff to worry about as a new mom! |
Has your doc. mentioned his/her concern about the weight gain? Are you at risk or have had previous medical complications b/c of blood pressure/weight gain?
I actually never kept track of my weight for the 1st preg. and I'm not really counting pounds with this 2nd one either. I can eyeball my portion sizes and make mental gauges of what/how much to eat. Plus, for me, I exercise daily b/c if I skip it I feel too "off". So, long as the nurses and doc. don't say anything about the weight/blood pressure I don't worry either. |
I have the same frame as you, and I gained at least 12 pounds in the first trimester. I don't know what to say except don't diet. Just continue or start to eat healthfully. At this point, you need to think about providing the best nourishment you can to the baby and forget about whether or not you look fat. Be gentle with yourself and cut yourself some slack! |
everything i've read suggests that women tend to gain the weight faster with the second child than the first. you won't necessarily gain *more* weight.
good luck and try not to freak out. ![]() i had the opposite problem - i gained only a pound in my first trimester and gained about 3 lbs a week during my third, despite not increasing my food intake and working out every day. it was bizarre and it definitely stressed me out. |
I'm glad other people are having similar issues. I have been eating in moderation and walking every day, and in only SIX weeks, I've gained six pounds. I'm not sure what to make of it, but my husband keeps assuring me that the weight gain must be natural since I haven't changed my eating habits. I'm just nervous about LOSING it after pregnancy! |
I'm in the same boat. I'm 7 weeks and have gained 5lbs already (though I'm not starting off petite...not technically overweight, but BMI=24) and I've been worried that if it continues at this rate I'll gain way too much. I hope its all mostly water. I've been really swollen lately. I've already had to take off my wedding ring because my fingers were like sausages when I woke up this morning. I'm not sure if I should be worried about that much swelling right now. |
I swelled up like crazy my first trimester as well, and gained at one point something like 4 lbs in a day. I started off pregnancy very slim -- 5'7 and 114 lbs. I'm 20 weeks now and have gained about 11 lbs total so far but had actually gained more than that during the first trimester alone (then lost some when the horrible bloating and constipation eased off after the first tri, and now am gaining it back at a slower and more normal pace). Throughout the entire pregnancy I've just eaten the same way I always have -- not even a ton more, just made more of an effort to be healthy and have made sure to get enough calcium and protein. Good luck to you! Your body will most likely do what it needs to do so unless doc is worried, don't sweat it out too much... |
