| My 4 month old has been congested for about a week. I used the bulb to get them out, then got the saline spray and that helped to get more out. But no matter how many times I suck out his nose he always sounds like there are some still up there. Is there anything else I can do or is that just how it will be until he is over this cold or whatever it is. He is not sick with anything else just a stuffy nose, no fever or anything. I have a check-up tomorrow but just thought I would see if anyone had any other ideas. |
| You sound like you're doing the right stuff- the boogers just replenish themselves. Good luck - it's very hard to have a congested baby. |
| I've had a congested baby since August! Ai yai yai! It just never ends. You seem to be doing a great job with the bulb. Mine hates it and it's a traumatic experience for both parents and baby, trying to get anything out. I am really beside myself! Try steaming up the bathroom and sitting there with your baby. That helps loosen some of the mucus also. |
| We actually bought an electric nasal aspirator and it helps a lot when DD is very stuffy It's also a lot faster than using the bulb. |
| Maybe you are already doing this, but I use the saline first to loosen everything up and then suction. |
Second this. I also used saline up to every half hour to keep my son clear when he had the croup. It was not fun, but it really helped him. |

Saline, then bulb here too. My two month old is pitiful every morning with her congested nose. I think it's from the dryness, even with a humidifier running 24/7.
She cries every time I do it but once she is breathing clearly again, all is well. I dread it! It's not fun for either of us but she visibly feels better, nurses more easily etc. You just have to keep doing it, unfortunately! |
| I also use the saline drops throughout the day (baby Ayr) and then suction a couple times a day. I tried the electric one and it didn't work at all. I wonder if it was defective? Or if it was just too up in his sinus to get it. I have the best luck with the bulbs. But, you have to find one that is very firm to suction out well. I have bought some crappy ones that are too loose to suction well. |

I would bring my babies in the shower with me from the time they were pretty little. It's a large shower, before they could sit I would lay them on the bath tub sponge, in the shower with me. I don't let the water get too hot, but the warm steam really helps loosen things up.
If the congestion gets bad, and the bulb thingy is not cutting it, I took a page from the old midwives book - (GROSS ALERT) - they would just put their mouth over the baby's nose and suck the snot out. Works every time. Better this gross few seconds than a baby that can't nurse or sleep. |
| OP here, thanks for all the advice. I do use the sailine peior to sucking but I will try it a few more times throughout the day as well. Do you think he could be congested from the air being too dry? Do most people put a humidifier in their child's room during the winter even wen they are not sick? I hadn't thought about getting one, I had one on my registry but didn't get it so just thought I would run out and get one if he got sick and needed it, but maybe it would help with dry air/congestion? |
| The humidifer defiintely helps with congestion. I used the warm mist. And I don't think you have to get a "Baby" one from baby stores. Target and drug stores carry basic ones, e.g. by Vicks for $40. Bed, Bath, Beyond carry these awesome high end (expensive) ones. Good luck. |
| My DH calls me the "Booger Hunter". DD HATES when I head towards her nose but it drives me crazy when she has "bats in the cave". I do all of the above and also found something at buy buy Baby and Babies R Us called "Boogie Wipes". It seemed like a total marketing gimmick, but they do seem to work better than tissue or wipes. They're saline wipes and are really wet which seems to help with some of the boogies. |
| I use a cool mist humidifier, it does help. |
| I would definitely use a humidifier regularly. And I would just buy a cheap one--I've spent money on more expensive models and they never last. |
