Gym employee stole my watch

Anonymous
I accidentally left my watch at the gym. I went in a week later and the front desk woman said "we found your watch". She looked but could not find it in the desk. Then, she asked the manager who said he saw it the previous day in an envelope in the desk, but could not find it either. I called today (2 days later) and they said they still havent found it and the general manager was looking into it. It is a $500 watch and I am pretty upset about it. I know technically they have no responsibility for stuff I leave behind, but shouldnt that change once they found it and "held" it for me?

1. They knew it was mine and never contacted me about it.
2. They took it for "safekeeping" but did not actually keep it safe.
3. Only employees had access to it.

Do I have any recourse? Whats the best way to approach this? I dont have any proof that it was mine, except that they said it was and I remember leaving it there, and the manager described it as similar to mine. I dont want to raise hell if it wont get me results.

I don't think there's anything you can do.

They had your watch in their possession and now they can't find it? That is a theft and I would tell them that if they can't resolve it internally in the next 24 hours, you are filing a police report. Let the police conduct an investigation and see how the gm likes that. Also, isn't there a security camera on the front desk? They can't review the tape?

They probably know who took it and are trying to deal with this internally. I would guess that person won't admit to it and no longer works there or is on probation. And they don't want to be responsible so you won't likely hear from them.

there's probably no way to prove it. sucks, but i don't see how raising a stink would help.

Why do you assume that this happened in DC? People don't steal in VA or MD?

I say DC as the area in whole. This area has some of the most trifling people I have ever seen

Why did you wait a week? Did you call them earlier in the week?

Since they acknowledged it, it seems like you would have some recourse.

OP here - it was in DC.

They acknowledged that it was handled improperly, as valuables are supposed to be given to the manager instead of left at the desk - he said people lose Ipods, etc, all the time. And since there is a very narrow window between when it was seen and when it was missing, they are going to question everyone. He said it would take a few days and I said if I didnt hear from them by Friday, I would have to file a police report. He acknowledged that they normally dont take responsibility but once it was in their possession, they did have some - especailly since they even knew it was mine and no one ever contacted me. he said if they couldnt find it, he would see what he could do.

We were both very nice about it

yeah that sucks. Someone stole my year-old Zumba shoes from the gym last week. My scatterbrain forgot them in my locker, and they are nowhere to be found. I can't imagine who would want to put their feet in someone else's foot sweat?! ew!

I have also had music stolen from the gym too. I know who took it, but can't prove it.

Be super careful at the gym!!!

OP here - gym said if they couldnt recover my watch from the employee who took it, they would replace it. There is something to be said for customer service
