Swimming lessons

I'd like to sign up my two-year-old son for swimming lessons this summer. Any suggestions on pools or clubs that offer lessons to non-members? We live in Chevy Chase DC. Thanks!

Try the Lowell School aquatics program. When my kids went there, the classes were small and the pool was lovely and warm!

I would highly recommend the swimming classes offered by Montgomery County at the Montgomery Aquatic Center, but I don't think the summer course guide is out yet. Once the guide is published, you can find it and register for classes online at the Montgomery County website under the Parks and Recreation section.

Can I piggyback a question OP? What's the youngest and/or best age to introduce swimming lessons to a child?

I'm the 16:47 poster (the champion of the Montgomery County programs). In the Mont Co programs, you can start with the Waterbabies classes as early as 6 months. I started my son at 7 months and he LOVED it. He has taken classes almost nonstop since then and still loves it and (if I may say so myself!) seems more confident in the water than some other children his age, so for us it was a good move. If you are able to take weekday morning classes at the Montgomery Aquatic Center, there is a terrific teacher named Mr. Farley who really teaches pre-swimming skills, eg. not songs and games in the water, but how to really acclimate your child to the water and get him/her ready to swim later on.

Clarabow,

I started my DS on lessons at 18 months and was glad I did. Some of the older kids (2 yrs and older) had trouble with fear of the water. A couple of kids even refused to get in at all, even over the course of the 6 weeks of lessons.

If you're not doing lessons, at least try to get your child exposed to the pool. My DS first went in a pool at about 14 months when we were on vacation and he was a natural at the swim lessons because he already loved the pool.

The lessons don't teach them to swim...it's just a way to get comfortable in the water and for the adult to learn things to do with their baby/toddler at the pool to encourage swimming.

If you want to take your baby earlier (9 months-12 months), that's good too. Lots of babies loved it!

OP here: Thanks so much for all this helpful info, esp. the recommendation about MAC. Any idea of the ballpark timeframe for registering for summer lessons there? I want to make sure to register before the classes fill up. Thanks again.
