Nursing question-warning graphic!

Anonymous
I am on month three of nursing and for the entire time have been EB--in the past two days due to some work issues, I have had to pump a lot since I don't have enough to store and didn't have time to sit down for my normal feedings which take an hour a shot--usually I only pump maybe once a day. I am now noticing pain in one of my breasts around the nipple and am wondering if this is normal pain from pumping a bunch in a short period of time or could this be a sign of matisis. Any thoughts or advice on how to make this go away. Thanks

Is it swollen, hard, or hot to the touch? Does it radiate? When you express milk by hand out of that nipple, does the milk seem different from its normal color, thickness, and smell/taste? It might be mastitis.

Is the pain more on the surface of the areola? Could just be from pumping a lot.

I would get a blocked duct when my nursing schedule changed like that. Perhaps you have a blocked duct near your nipple? Maybe try heat and massage in a hot shower to see if it helps.

My nips totally hurt if I have to pump a lot in one or two days. I don't think its uncommon. Give them a rest from pumping if you can.

I doubt it's mastitis since you seem to pump and feed quite a it. I'd say it's from "overuse," for lack of a better term.

Usually mastitis is a hard lump, as one PP mentioned. And I agree - a warm shower and a massage helps. And - correct me if I'm wrong - but I thought mastitis usually occurs away from the nipple. That's why I think it's from pumping so much.

Okay, not to be a jerk here, but how is this graphic?

Chill. . .boobs hurt sometimes while pumping and breastfeeding. You will be okay. I assure you.

Make sure the "flanges" on your pump are the right size. I know that when I started pumping more frequently, I realized that the standard size was not large enough (yeeouch!) and had to buy the bigger ones

You CHILL. This is obviously a new mom who does not yet see her boobs as little more than udders as so many of the rest of us, who have nursed multiple babies, do. Cut her some slack. If I can even remember that far back, it does indeed freak you out the first time you think you might have a breast-feeding related issues like a blocked duct, thrush or mastitits. AND it does hurt, even if its just from over pumping.

OP - it will be okay. It may be a blocked duct. I got blocked ducts with baby #2 frequently from pumping. Make sure and wash your nipples off with a warm cloth, and gently squeeze, when you are done pumping to prevent this. Also, advice from the other PPs above is very good.

Why don't you call your OB if you have any doubts at all-pain can be a sign that something is wrong. Don't feel foolish about this, call your doctor. If it turns out to be over pumping and not something more serious, all the better.

After the first month mine never hurt while nursing or pumping - if you are out of the first weeks woods, pain should not be expected but seen as a warning sign or a sign that something should be different (like the size of your pump parts, as a PP said).

Pain from breastfeeding is not "GRAPHIC", okay, people?

Now, the thread about the woman who's husband spread his buttcheeks during Oral Sex? That was graphic.

Try lightly coating the inside of the flanges with olive oil. That will cut down on the friction on your nipples. It's totally fine for some of the oil to make it into the milk.

Good luck. I think it's just the different pumping schedule that's got you feeling sore.
