Assume it is cancelled. There is nothing about it on their website and no message at the phone #.
Just want to make sure because they only have one other open house, and I can't make that one. Really hoping they reschedule. At the charter school expo, they said over 150 people had already registered for the open house tonight. |
I got an email that it is cancelled and will be rescheduled. |
Did it bother anyone else how many grammatical errors were in the cancelation email? I try not to let those things get to me, esp given my own auto-correct problems, but so many schools seem to have sloppy communication. |
You mean like how you misspelled "cancelation" in your post? |
Funny, it's a variant more common in my home country, but Webster's dictionary does list both spellings. |
Im close to Haynes but for the last few years I haven't heard much about it from local families. I would love to hear how its doing these days but I am starting to think its losing out on some good students who are now going to IT, CM and Basis and Latin. |
We have just started Haynes this year (PK3) and are quite happy with it, so far. We do not know what the long term picture is, but honestly that is the case with other charters too.The elementary school principal is stepping down, so there is a new search. She has generally been seen as highly effective. Another data point is that scores slipped a lot this year. There are lots of possible reasons for it and I do not think it reflects a sudden ineffectiveness of the teaching, but it is a data point worth noting and watching out for. It is a fairly large school, with two campuses, and so it doesn't feel as intimate as some schools (eg, parent group). It is pretty diverse. It does not seem to have as much parental involvement or intimate size as some charters, but I really like the parents I have met and appreciate the all school activities. I think year round is great for my kid and his teachers are wonderful. He is in a class with a 1:7 ratio, which I really appreciate.
So, basically we like it. Are we over the moon, we're never leaving? No, but we like it a lot and feel pretty lucky we got in. We are not sure whether we will enter the lottery this year. We might consider trying for pie in the sky chance at Mundo Verde or LAMB for bilingual education, but in general we are happy with our teachers and our child is thriving there, so we will probably stay put for the next couple years assuming things continue to go well. |
Thanks for the feedback on the school. Can you note how much Spanish they get in pk3? |
Thanks, PP, for your feedback! A couple of other questions. What kind of framework do they use for their PK3/PK4 program? Is it play-based or more academic? Also, do you have experience with the aftercare? What is the cost, and does a typical afternoon look like? |
thanks so much for this. My daughter is still too young for school but I am already attending a few open houses in and around our neighborhood to try to start getting the feel for some of the schools. I have friends who have kids in 3/4th grade at EL Haynes and they love it but so far most of the younger parents around us are all trying to get into CM and IT right now. Its so hard to know what the right fit will be for any kid so I appreciate this feedback. I have another year to worry about this... |
My son is in PK4 and I am pretty sure Spanish is a special they get 2 times a week for 30 min. Senorita Ross is great! |
I posted earlier about pk3. Pp is right that Spanish is twice a week. There is also music and art with specialized teachers. After care is well
Organized with various themes. (Music focus this winter). Crafts, outdoor play etc, but very much continuation of the day and sorted by age.It is 75/week or about 18/drop in. As for academic versus play; I think it is more structured than Montessori with an academic focus but my son lives it. Lots of choice and center time, with academics integrated into play. Model is responsive classroom and they have been adopting common core at upper grades. |
EL Haynes at the PK3 and PK4 level aim for 1/3 play time (in group settings, different play stations etc), 1/3 structured teaching and 1/3 logistics (nap, lunch, transitioning to specials, etc.)
My daughter is in PK3 and is really enjoying it. Of course the only thing that tempts me to do the lottery is aiming for a bilingual education. |
