Seventh Generation Diapers and Wipes

Anonymous
Hello,

I have a 2-weeks old girl with bad diaper rash. It could be I'm breast feeding her and she is pooping over 20 times a day. I've been using Seventh Generation diapers and wipes, but doesn't seem like it's any better than Pampers.

My question is, is it really better for the baby to use these natural products that cost more money? I feel like Costco brand wipes works as well as the 7th Generation.

Thanks!

Most people use seventh generation baby wipes and diapers purely for environmental reasons, not because the brand is necessarily better. In my opinion, most baby wipes do the job effectively. Diaper rash has nothing to do with what baby wipes you use. Call your pediatrician's office and have them recommend a diaper rash cream but if the rash doesn't go away within 4-5 days, you should make an appointment to see your pediatrician because your baby might have a yeast infection (over the counter diaper rash creams won't treat a yeast infection so after your pediatrician confirms that it is a yeast infection, you'll be given a prescription cream). I recently went through this myself with my 10 month old. You can also help diaper rash and/or a yeast infection by letting your baby go without a diaper for a while so the skin can air out. Good Luck.

My son is very sensitive to wipes. He is 19 months old now and the ONLY kind of wipes we can use are the infant pampers for sensitive skin. Anything else gets an immediate reaction, and we have tried a variety.

Diaper rash can also come from a food adversion and will continue to show up until you eliminate it, even with creams. I had that with my new born while I was breastfeeding and it didn't go away until I eliminated all dairy from my diet. It was hard not to have any dairy (or whey or other dairy byproducts that are in most processessed food) for 9 months! Unfortunately, this is not an uncommon issus. Hope you find a different solution.

Here is my advice about her diaper rash. Use any brand of diapers, but don't use wipes. Use cotton balls dipped in water, much, much easier on the little bottom. When your baby is older, and her skin is less sensitive, use wipes.

I also would advice using either Dr. Bordauex's butt paste, or Burt's Bee's diaper cream and powder. Use it every diaper change until her rash is cleared up.

Really Seventh Generation is better for the environment than other disposable diapers

however I HIGHLY recommend cloth diapers they are HEALTHIEST for babies and best for the environment ... and way CHEAPER

We've also found that using cloth cleared up all rashes. For a wipe we just use an old cotton sheet cut up and soaked in water.

Our pediatriciqan said not to use wipes with a newborn. Just use soft paper towel (bounty works well), and water for the first few (6?) weeks.

We were also adviced by our doctor not to use wipes on DS while he was a newborn. Instead, we were advised to use either water or Cetaphil cleanser with a washcloth or cotton balls. We did this for about a month, then switched to Huggies sensitive, which have worked for us ever since.

Also, my memory may be off, but I don't think DS ever pooped nearly 20 times a day. Maybe that's part of the problem.

I agree with PPs who suggest not using wipes on a newborn. For a recalcitrant diaper rash, a zinc oxide cream is helpful, as are alternating applications of an antibiotic cream and an antifungal cream. Sears' "The Baby Book" has a good section on this and an excellent "prescription" for it.
