Help -- Infant Daycare Options in DC?

My husband and I are expecting our first child. We are looking for daycare options in Northwest DC (anywhere south of Woodley Park). This could be a commercial daycare or a daycare in someone's home. We would be looking for a daycare that accepts infants six months or older. We are new to this so any suggestions would be very welcome!

You should visit the daycare forum. Just to give you a preview though: infant daycares in DC are very few, very expensive, and have ridiculous waiting periods. Good luck!

Go to the D.C. Schools website - they have a search for all D.C. accredited programs, from infant care to preschools to private schools. You can narrow the search by age and ward. The list includes any accredited home day care providers as well as centers.

I agree with 19:14.

the wait lists are loooooooooooooooooooong and you have to pay anywhere from $50 to $100 just to get on the lists -- with no guarantee! I got on lists when I was four months pregnant and was lucky, lucky, lucky to land a spot when DC was 5 months.

also, after the baby is born, you should call monthly (or more often) each center you're waitlisted at to remind them you're still interested. I swear this helps. when DS was three months, I started visting the centers in person, so the directors could place name/face and know that I was really serious about going there. if that's something you have the time to do, I highly recommend it.

of the top of my head, the ones that accept infants downtown: huckleberry cheesecake, a few of the bright horizons centers, small savers, U.S kids, first baptist church (16th st.), capital kids.

good luck!

I agree with the PP - if you don't inquire regularly, you will most likely never get a call that you're off the list.

It's a delicate balance betweem stalking and reminding
