Pregnant, breastfeeding and starving!

Anonymous
I am currently 12 w pregnant, BFing my 8 m.o. and hungry all the time. I gained way too much weight with my first pregnancy and since the kids are so close together, havent lost all that weight, and dont want to gain too much weight this time around. But I am just always so hungry! I am trying not to eat any junk, but any large quantity of food, even healthy, has lots of calories. I am happy to eat fish, chicken breast, veggies, and whole grains, etc. but it adds up.

Any suggestions?

um, if you're nursing and pregnant your body needs those calories. I wouldn't worry about the weight at this point, esp. since your first is only 8 mos! I'd try to eat a lot of calcium rich foods!

I had a similar experience and my OB told me to concentrate on eating healthy foods, um, no cookies, candy, etc, which was really easy to justify. I did however eat boatloads of cheese and not think twice about it. The key is eating calories with plenty of nutrients.

wow. I can't even imagine what you must feel like bfing and pg! I say eat up (healthy of course). I gained A LOT during both my pregnancies, way more than the norm...you CAN lose it later! Don't deprive yourself...Bon appetit!

I was the same way - except #1 was a few months older.

Some go to dishes for me - if your baby who you are nursing can handle it were lentils, black beans, and chick peas (not all together)

Lentils were not a std part of my diet and I just happened to make a dish while I was pregnant and found it to be a good food for me. They are a great source of Protein, high in fiber, folate and iron. And really easy to make!

My supply had defintely decreased - but not sure if it was pregnancy or #1 was getting a lot of other food / drinking whole milk and not interested anymore.

Good luck!

Have you tried increasing your protein - not necessarily chowing down burgers and steaks each night, but keeping it in moderation and adding peanuts and beans to your diet.

Don't forget to drink lots of fluids. Your body needs it not only for producing BM, but for maintaining good levels of amniotic fluid.

You may also want to talk with your doc. about your prenatal vitamins. Since your nursing and preggers, he/she may want you to double the dosage or take one with more iron.

Take heart - depending on when you are going to wean, you only have a few more months of Bfing - my DD went to whole milk a week before she turned 12 mo. so my body didn't have to manage two babies for too long.

congrats and good luck.

I say your body is now a mommy machine, so try to just eat healthy and cut yourself some slack on weight.

You can lose it later, but as long as you are eating healthy foods (lots of veggies) you have literally two little lives depending on you so don't worry too much about weight.

Isn't it amazing what women can do? This type of post reminds me how truly incredible our bodies are.

Indeed! Have you tried soups or yogurt smoothies? I was addicted to both during my pregnancy. Good nutrition and the extra fluid helped keep me feeling full.

OP here - thanks for all the advice. Its important for me to keep my weight down, not just bc its so hard to lose afterwards, but also bc I had preeclampsia with my first pregnancy and my Dr. told me that even thought they dont know what causes it, being overweight is a risk factor. Since I started this pregnancy 20+ lbs over where I was before baby #1, I am far more concerned about how high my weight can climb. I am also going to the gym every day so that makes me hungrier as well.

I will definitely try not to stress about it and just eat as healthy as possible, but the vast quantities of food I seem able to consume has me a little worried. I appreciate all the advice and will just do my best.

Thanks!

yoga always curbs my appetite. you could also try acupuncture.

My second pregnancy I ate ALL the time, and I only gained ten pounds my entire pregnancy. The amount of calories needed per day to maintain milk supply and sustain a pregnancy is quite substantial, some where around 500 calories per day.

I did find that while nursing and pregnant, I would get low blood sugar fairly often. The only thing that seemed to curb this was a big spoon of peanut butter.
