Look, being fat is bad. Being thin is good. Being fat = unattractive. Thin IS pretty and desirable.

No amount of pouting over that or indignance about comments made on a stupid TV show will change those facts.

So should public figures of color endure racist jokes? After all, they put themselves in the public eye and we all know that popular media sees darker skin as bad.

Or should celebrities with disabilities put up with nasty comments? Hey, they put themselves out there.

Bitch I can't change my skin color. Not can I grow a fucking arm. This fatty can go be a Jenny Craig spokesperson.
Have you had too many pumpkin lattes?
You're an idiot. Or a troll. Don't you realize that if you are a white person, 60 years ago you'd be calling black people the N-word. Clean yourself up.

It really looked like Dunham wanted to say I'm too cool and too smart for this kind of bs. Yes, she's heavy but she also didn't make an effort. I think the fashion round up shows are entertaining and watch them after all the big awards shows. I have never seen them make any kind of comment about Octavia Spencer or Melissa McCarthy or Queen Latifah because they all show up dressed properly and looking very glam. With everything Dunham had access to it's kind of unbelievable the way she looked. She was trying to discount the industry that she herself works in.

Interesting theory about Joan's motive. Perhaps you're right. I didn't see last night's show, but I do usually watch it after the big awards ceremonies. I've never heard Joan Rivers or the other "police" on her show ridicule anyone's size or body before. I've been pleasantly surprised and pleased with the way they critique the fashion while being very accepting of women's different bodies. They do often note how well or how poorly a dress flatters the wearer, but they treat weight the same way they treat any other physical trait that affects the way a dress looks on someone, like height, coloring, bustiness, etc. It's always been respectful of women's actual bodies, and the larger message has been that everyone can look good, can look their best, with thoughtful fashion choices.

In other words, criticizing Lena's body seems like a real departure.

Joan River makes fun of women all the time b/c of their looks:

She started in on a Elizabeth Taylor and basically made a living off of being a nasty bitch who isn't clever or funny:

How do you know what Lena Dunham's natural body type is or isn't. Don't assume that all people who are heavier (i.e., not stick thin) are that way because they can't diet.

And plenty famous people of color in the public eye do their best to "whiten" their features - so don't pretend otherwise.

What does this tell my daughters? Unless you are a size 2 or 4 you should be ashamed? Avoid the public eye? And if you see someone else bigger than a 4, then you're allowed to mock their body?

I am worried what a show like "Girls" tells my DD. If this show is reflective of the culture of the modern young woman, I shudder.

You people like Lena because she's a liberal harpie. She's crude, has nasty tattoos, is overweight and is fugly. Facts.

I only watch FP after the big award nights and never see Rivers anywhere else either, so maybe she's just better behaved on those occasions? A couple of years ago, my husband was teasing me for watching the show, assuming that they were ridiculing the women's bodies and I insisted he watch with me, that they were really focused on women dressing well for their bodies. (He also appreciates fashion!) He was pleasantly surprised.

As a not-thin person, I think comments on her weight are just going to happen. Yes, she's overweight. Obese? No. She dresses in unflattering clothes, both in real life and on her show. She shows herself undressed - her choice, but she knows she's opening herself up to criticism. She's a smart girl - and she could have lost weight by now if she wanted to - she's been famous for awhile. Her size is part of her "thing" - and I guarantee you she knows about it and knows people talk about it.

I agree with this poster.

And, Joan Rivers? She's a hot mess in own right. I saw her on QVC last week and I don't think she's doing very well. She was pretty unstable on her feet.
