15 mo DS and I just started playgroup last week, and despite the fact that I didn't see any visibly sick kids there, I spent the entire weekend floored with one of the worst colds I've ever had, and poor little DS is pretty snuffly too. I SAH, so this is both of our first exposures to massive amounts of toddler germs. He is on probiotics and I try very hard to eat healthy and take my vitamins - what else can we do? I can't exactly chase him around with hand sanitizer during free play. Help! |
Let him get sick. Better now than in preschool or K. |
These always go around this time of year. Our whole house was hit this week and we rarely get sick. |
What makes you think the germs were from playgroup? YOu don't think germs hang out on shopping carts, door handles, libraries, faucets, etc.?
And germs of one person maybe "normal" for them (maybe they have a built immunity to germ X, but to you or your kid it may be something that causes a cold), so just b/c someone isnn't visibly sick doesn't mean it's not incubating or problematic. And having a cold isn't the worse thing in the world. Everyone gets one here and there. Of all the things to worry about in childhood, this should be the least of your worries. |
This is just pretty much going to happen. If you don't get all of the colds now, you will get them all later. There is no escape. |
My daughter (2 and a half) spent four nights in the hospital after what we thought was a cold. And yes it is from toddler playgroups. They all put their hands in the mouths. She was sick from daycare every month from 8 months on. The reason she was in the hospital was from mono (which I believe she had in April). The doctors never tested her for it. Then she got another virus in May, which her immune system just could not fight off. She had 12 straight days of fever in May. Everyone says not to worry about your kids getting sick and how it can build up an immune system. However, there is something to be said for a five year olds immune system versus a one or two year olds. |
To answer your question, I have pulled her from daycare to give her immune system a break. We wash hands constantly. I carry hand sanitizer wherever we go. |
Eat lots of quality protein, fruits and veggies.
Avoid all processed foods, empty carbs and sugar. But really, you're going to get sick. It happens. |
Agree with this. My kid was sick every three weeks in the winter months of day care, for years. He never missed a day of kindergarten, but the kids who stayed home most of those first five years got sick a lot. It's going to happen at some point. However, I don't think that means do nothing. I don't want you to avoid other kids. Vitamin D supplements and kefir helped my son a lot. Same concept as the probiotics. Good luck. |
The first three months of daycare were insane. I might have had two colds at one time. I got sick never ending.
I did ask some friends for suggestions. They suggested changing his clothes right away, sanitizing his hands before getting in car, sanitizing my hands more. Mostly I think it's just an adjustment period for the immune system and your kid is better for it. If not now, then they go through this phase in K and that's a lot worse (doctor's notes needed for excused absences, etc.) I did find that I needed more sleep to boost my immune system and I had to relax my housekeeping standards to increase my sleep. GL. It is a phase and it does pass by. |
