Can anything be done about the nastiness on this forum?

Totally agree. I challenge everyone here to create a login name. Be part of the solution.

Okay, you first!

I like that it's anonymous. I want to police my own behavior.

How does "Lab" make you less anonymous? Ten four, good buddy.

I'm not proposing anyone use a "real" name; I can totally understand why most of us would want to remain anonymous. I'm suggesting we use logins, just like most other message boards out there. I'd be willing to bet that if people start doing that, it would cut down the garbage significantly. No one's forced to use a login here, but I'm just trying to encourage you and everyone else to do it voluntarily. It's the only way there will ever be any level of accountability here.

If you've participated in other message boards on other topics, you've probably used a login name (and still remained anonymous). However, in my experience at least, on message boards where logins are the norm, the discussion is better (and there is less nastiness). Of course there will always be jerks, but when people are using logins, you can spot them immediately and better avoid "feeding the trolls."

Logins suck! Every so often someone brings this up and it doesn't amount to much. People love to be nasty and not wouldn't feel like they could if they were logged in.

You just get used to it after a while. I read it and keep on going. I doesn't affect you too much if you don't join in.

the problem is that most parents are not strong enough to take the truth.
if someone has a different opinion everybody calls them a troll.
the truth sometimes hurt and you should be strong enough to take it.
i do agree that there are ways and ways to say the truth but if you don't take it personally you'll get the message.
anyway, everybody is anonymous so there's no way that the "rude" message will be personal

; )

I like being anonymous. And blunt.

to the 2157 poster: Just refer to posters based on the time stamp of their message if you need a "point of contact".

Although there are plenty of nasty folks out there trolling on the board I think there are also a fair amount of hyper-sensitive folks who find fault with even the slightest bit of criticism or a response that does not sit well with them specifically. We all bring baggage here (look at any post re. MIL's!) and the best thing to do is take a deep breath and try not to dive into the fracas or take offense. I had someone recently jump all over a really vanilla statement I had made that they took to be offensive. I thought long and hard about explaining myself/defending my statement and then decided it would not add anything to the original posters comment. Perhaps we could try that approach as the "bigger" people. One the thread drops off the first page it's forgotten anyway.

I agree w/ this. It's the same w/ kids!

actually, it helps
On other boards which require names to post, i can tell which posts i should not bother to read...
But I prefer this format

I don't mind the nastiness, but i do dislike it when people are attacked for having an unpopular viewpoint. It's the vulgarity that bothers me. I'm glad there isn't a lot of it.
