Any experience with Navy Federal Mortgages?

Curious if anyone has had postive or negatives experiences applying for one, closing, maintaining mortgage etc.

I have had buyers use Navy Fed on two of my listings. Process went smoothly but communication lacked a bit. Both closed on time and without any issues. Shop rates naturally. I'm not a big fan of their 100% conventional financing as the associated fees and rates will bury a homeowner into the mortgage. If you're going VA or conventional, you should be okay. I had lunch with a TD Bank lender that also has a great VA program for qualified buyers. If you need more info, just let me know.

We're in the application process of using NFCU for a mortgage right now. Their rates were a lot better than others we checked, and they have some closing assistance promotion, AND they indicate that they do not plan to sell the loan to another servicer, which I find interesting.
So far, no issues.

We had Navy Federal for the mortgage on the first and home we bought - everything went very smoothly and we got a great rate, although they were kind of slow. We used them again when we moved and bought our second home. They never sold our mortgage either time. When we refinanced last year we used someone else. A little faster, a very slightly better rate, they have already sold our loan (I think they had it less than a year). Overall I was very pleased with Navy Federal.

Almost went with them, but they were so slow, and we were in a multiple bid situation.

When you say they were slow, do you mean you missed the closing date?

Please refrain from offering services. DCUM isn't a marketing tool for you.

I always thought the VA program was essentially the same between the lenders (based on my assumption that the VA dictated the terms and the lender was merely a vehicle). What you say is great to know, can you explain what some of the differences are? Also, happy to hear the contact of the TD bank lender.

VA is definitely not the same between lenders. that is a lie one lender told us. the rate and closing costs can vary between lenders like conventional loans.

We tried to use them when we bought our place, and they were not very responsive...when they were, they were slow. The rate wasn't that great but we figured that we did all our banking there, so it'd be super easy to deal with them. Additionally, their closing costs were twice what we ended up paying. For me, it didn't seem like they understood the DC market (we own in DC)

We went with a different place who ended up sending us to Wells Fargo. Our refinance was with amerisave who then sold it right away back to Wells Fargo.

We have used Navy Federal Credit Union for multiple mortgages.
The last two mortgages in the Maryland area, one purchase in 2009, and one very recent refinance were disasters due to loan processors that took forever to act or respond. Example on the refinance: We don't hear from our processor for days and she calls on a Thursday and says "we need to close on your loan because the terms expire the following Tuesday". So she asks "do we want to close on Friday" and I asked "tomorrow"? "Oh" she says then we will need to do it on Monday. Do they not look at a calendar? So because she took forever processing our loan my husband had to miss a long scheduled meeting so we could close on Monday. The 2009 loan would have never taken place if the CEO of NFCU had not intervened on our behalf. The loan department went from being rude and belligerent to so very polite once they found out we knew the CEO.
Having said this just a few months ago we had a great experience with a NCFU loan processor in California for a new purchase . She was efficient, polite, knowledgeable, and kept up a constant stream of communication with everyone involved.
As far a servicing the loans we have not had any issues in the 20 years we have had mortgages.
I do wish they would be more forthcoming on their mortgage web site. Pentagon Federal puts all their loan disclosures right on the loan information page.
