Horrifying. Just reading the thread title makes me shake.

I am still haunted by that extensive article on the subject a year or two ago. In the Post?

So so tragic.

I will now be vigilant to check cars with carseats to see if a baby is inside! We should all do this. I wish somebody would raise awareness about this issue.

Heartbreaking. It can happen to anyone. Parents need to take steps (putting purse or phone in the backseat) to present this.

I don't have the stomach to read about the latest baby. The piece you mention from the Post was really well done. Gene Weingarten won a Pulitzer for his work:

I just got choked up reading this. I park in a garage, so I think I'm safer if I do this, but everything else is the same for me. Same age baby, same city, same commute, same hospital. My heart just breaks for her, her partner, and the poor baby. DH and I started texting each other when we did drop off for a little while, but we've since stopped remembering to do this. Just the other day, I was supposed to pick him up from day care, although I usually don't, and I almost forgot. The same thing could happen for drop off with much more dire consequences.

The other day I called my husband just to remind him to pick up milk (or whatever grocery item) when he took ds to the store. And I nonchalantly added "How's [baby] behaving for you?" Really I was just paranoid because he's used to running errands alone; it's not routine for him to have ds in the car.

He's also notorious for leaving his wallet and phone in the car by accident, so stashing them behind the carseat would not help. I mean, there has never been a real scare that he's left ds in the car, but I can't help but worry.

Sheesh this is horrible. I've called the cops when I see dogs locked in hot cars, but never saw a baby - ill keep an eye out like a PP said when I happen to see a car seat. Frightening.

Horrible.

Put your purse (or briefcase, or some other important item that you need to retrieve at your destination) in the backseat next to or under the carseat. That way you have to go back there to grab it and you will spot a your child in the process.

Horrible and heartbreaking. Those poor families. My heart especially goes out to the Arlington mother who is surely suffering both indescribable grief and guilt.

Yes, thank you for correctly identifying that piece. It was really well done.
