Infants, Toddlers, & Preschoolers

We are thinking to enroll our 2 year old to a daycare and are worry about naps.
They do not have cribs but they do have sleeping pads. How does that work? Has anyone gone through this process and was it difficult? How do they keep any toddler from NOT walking away and actually get some nap time in? |
| At the daycares we've used, the teachers sit with the children, rubbing their backs if necessary, until they fall asleep. It's one of those cases of kids behaving better for other people, partly -- one of my kids who always wanted to be rocked at home would, at daycare, get up from lunch, flop onto his cot, and fall asleep immediately. |

I was worried about it too because my son is still in a crib at 2 years, 3 months old. He had been using a crib only at his old provider's place but at 2, they use cots at his new daycare that are about 6 inches off the floor and have no bedrails. He does fine with it, and in fact I think he wants to switch to a bed now so we are going to switch him this week. He keeps crawling into our bed at home and playing "night-night"!
I think they really follow the leader at school. I wouldn't worry too much. |
| At the centers I have worked at the children slept on cots. I personally think nap time is too long (3 hours) Not all of the children go to sleep, some just lie there. The children that didn't sleep, I would let get a book to quietly look at while they laid down, some would eventually fall asleep. Once the child gets into the daily routine, they learn that nap time is quiet time to sleep or lie there quietly to rest, so usually they don't get up. |
Thank you both...cots, that is the word I should have used, not pads

My DD started a Montessori program (ft) after 2 years w/a nanny and napping perfectly in her own crib. I was pretty nervous when they said that 2 and up nap on mats. I thought there would be no way she would go for it. But the very first day she did great. She knows it's her mat for napping and when it's nap time that's it. She's always been a great sleeper, but mostly a crib sleeper only, so we were really happy about. Seeing their peers doing it is a huge influence. She is now asking to go potty like the bigger kids. We're loving it!
Your lo will do great. |
| You would be AMAZED at how easily the kids sleep at school. My dd won't even think of a nap at home and hasn't for more than a year, but at school she'll nap half the time. The beginning might be rough, but the kids start to behave like siblings at school and feel comfortable sleeping near each other w/o a disturbance. I'm always shocked to see it! I can't even get ONE kid to sleep! |
