What beverages do you drink in pregnancy?

Anonymous
Newly pregnant expectant mom here. Before getting pregnant, I was a big soda and juice drinker, and barely drank water. I never drank coffee or caffeinated sodas, though because I can't handle caffeine. Now I am trying to drink more healthfully, but our tap water tastes horrible, and I don't mind water as long as it's bottled, but am worried about the plastic containers. I love OJ, lemonade and all fruit juices. Most juices are in plastic containers too. I'm not really sure what's the healthiest to drink. Thanks!

I drank a ton of milk, both cold and steamed. One weird drink I really liked was unsweetened cranberry juice diluted with about four parts water-not something I would drink when I'm not pregnant, but it tasted so tart and good.

I mix water with a splash of juice in a plastic/BPA-free water bottle. Drink it throughout the day.

Tap water or Britta or bottled?

OP here. Milk is something I can't really drink--I am lactose intolerant and have always had a hard time with the texture. I do make up for it by eating a ton of dairy, so hopefully that is ok.

Water, coffee, occasionally wine.

For a while I had huge cravings for grapefruit juice, which I never drank pre-pregnancy. Odd. I watered it down a bit to cut down on the calories/sugar.

I was a huge soda drinker pre-pregnancy and have cut back but still drink one or two cans a day. Each can has about 40 mg of caffeine, and the recommendation is to stay under 200 mg while pregnant, so I feel no guilt about this.

I also drink Crystal Light type drinks, though I know they're not great for me. But I just really can't stand water. Sometimes I do decaf iced tea.

Even if you're not worried about the plastic containers, the calories and sugar in juices usually mean moderation is recommended for pregnant women. OP's question is legit. For me, water, but it was a struggle and it had to be ice, ice cold.

The one real "hippy" environmental thing I try to stick with is avoiding BPA (and some other chems like parabens) because I've read way too much research. This includes trying to cut down on cans (since most are lined with BPA). I buy milk in a glass container and to me, it tastes better. It also lasts a lot longer. But I don't think BUYING juice in a plastic container that you don't reuse will hurt you.

I drink water all day, I make one trip to starbucks and have a half black/half passion unsweetened iced tea (passion is decaf). I was into grapefruit juice for a while, too.

Do you have a soda stream? If not, that is a great product - you can flavor water the way you want. A little squirt of the syrup is still WAY better than soda. I often make it and flavor it with sliced citrus or cucumber/mint. It's great. A bit pitcher of filtered water with the same left in the fridge to flavor is also great.

I didn't really worry about drinking from plastic, but if that's a concern for you natural foods stores will have a good selection of drinks in glass.

Juice and milk are so unhealthy- just drink water. Sparkling or still, and flavor with fruit or frozen fruit ice cubes if you want. Fruit is nutritionally equivalent to soda.

I was drinking juice. water and milk - until I was diagnosed with GD (I am not overweight either). I now do water (regular and sparkling) and 1-2 small glasses of milk plus a light and fit greek yogurt. You can also try almond milk. If you liked soda, sparkling water may hit the mark and some come in glass bottles if you are concerned about the plastic. For a special treat(before the GD) I would occassionally have a San Pelegrino Blood Orange Soda. Yes, it is soda - but no corn syrup and has the same amount of sugar as fruit juice.

OP here. For all you water drinkers, are you drinking tap, bottled, or filtered, and if filtered, what kind of filter? Our tap water tastes horrible--can't handle it straight from the tap. I like the taste of bottled, but am concerned about the plastic.
