Pudgy stomach & early ultrasounds

Anonymous
I'm pregnant with my 2nd and have an OB appt tomorrow (12 weeks) and my NT on Thursday. My stomach is much flabbier than it was the first time around (I'm not hugely overweight but definitely have some post c-section "mom chub.)" Will the early ultrasounds still work abdominally? I do have a home doppler and was able to hear a HB this morning with it, so I'm guessing it'll be fine, but I'm self conscious about it and remembering how relatively flat my stomach was at this point with #1

They'll work.

It still works.

Yup, they might not be too comfortable for you, but they'll work. My tech jammed and shoved the US wand pretty hard into my pudge for the NT and I didn't particularly care for it, but seeing the baby was worth it, so I didn't say anything.

THey will work. I was overweight during my first pregnancy (5 foot 4, 165 start weight) and no prob.

What do you think they do to 200-pound women? Yes, it will work.

If they do it abdominally that early on, don't they make you drink a ton of water beforehand, and if they can't see what they need to see, they do it trans-vaginally. You may be worrying about nothing, OP.

This is a ridiculous question. Yes of course it will work.

Nope. I wasn't asked to drink water beforehand.

This is NOT a ridiculous question. Chubby FTM here - I've had my fill of the McDonnell Special thanks to IVF so trust me, I was SO ready to be done with them.

You'll be fine. Worst case, they'll do a vaginal one but when they did that with me for the NT scan, there really was no difference on the picture - the baby still wouldn't move its hands from its face to see the nasal bone so the vaginal one was pretty useless. They might have trouble with the Doppler early on, but that's not likely because of you, either, but because early on the HB is hard to find.

Congrats!!

What is ridiculous about it? There are so many scare tactics used on obese expectant mothers.

Really? I was (this was at GWMFM). You don't need to drink insane amounts of water; I did with my first, and all that resulted in was the tech imaging my bladder and repeating ad nauseum, "your bladder is SO FULL." (Yes, and your pressing on it doesn't help) I thought the water was pretty SOP before 20 weeks or so.

I also don't think it's a ridiculous question--glad you've gotten good advice, OP! I hope all goes well at your scan!

Yes, really. And had a great NT scan.

Thanks too all who were helpful! (OP here). I'm not obese - about 15 lbs overweight - but I was much slimmer with my first, especially in the belly. Happy to hear others have had positive experiences, regardless of weight.
