| We live in Fort Greene, and I realize I can't replicate it (plus, I've seen what happens to posters who try), but I'd like to be able to walk to a couple of decent restaurants, one place that gets my latte right (ech, I hate myself for saying that), and maybe a couple of stores that don't exist anywhere else? |
| It's the 35-minute Columbia commute that's the problem. Are you flexible on that? |
| I still say Eckington, Shaw, Bloomingdale. 45 min tops to Columbia - maybe look into a nanny share for now until you get your bearings? There are a tone of shares in Bloomingdale near us. |
| yeah, that's not silver spring. And Takoma Park would feel preettyy small town. The problem with the DC area is TRAFFIC. It makes LA natives blanch. Try the commute for a bit... then see what you think. My husband and I have lots of friends and fun in DC but we would rather live in Baltimore. It's cooler, really. And the houses are awesome! Great housing stock. |
| 45 minutes is tough, but so is living with a bitter me. On the other hand, I do like him and would appreciate seeing him for dinner at nights... This has been quite a reality check, DCUM-ers! |
Much of Baltimore's housing stock is deteriorating to the point of no return. |
| Then really need to consider Baltimore. You can still connect with your friends in DC, but you'll have better housing options and a much better chance of seeing DH before 8pm. |
Ignore this buffoon. He/she will say the same about anything in the District. |
| We didn't even consider Baltimore, to be honest. The Wire is a really effective show. As are these graphics: http://www.cityrating.com/crime-statistics/maryland/baltimore.html#.UXSVhSvF3e4 Does the city just get a bum rap? |
H St NE = bars, bars, and more bars. And some chicken wing places. U st. = bars, some restaurants, more bars, a furniture store and one gym BloomingDALE - bars. a coffee house. 4 restaurants and more bars. Some chicken wings carryout places. Is this what you were thinking? |

There are lots of posts here about reverse commutes up to Columbia and Baltimore, with most people reporting that those commutes are at highway speeds.
I vote with those who mentioned downtown Silver Spring and/or Takoma Park. |
| Are you looking for a house or an apartment? We moved from the UWS last year and now live in AU Park and love it. DC is at one of the schools you mentioned and it is so much better than NYC. Not sure what the commute is like from Friendship Heights to Columbia, but the other aspects fit. |
Sorry, you'll either have to give up your desired neighborhood feel or the commute time. It sucks, but that's DC
|
|
If you don't have a job - rent in Columbia at first.
I think its kind of strange that you are considering a 35 mile commute TO Columbia. |
The stats for DC are a hell of a lot worse! |
