We went to Nando's Peri Peri a few weeks ago, and I loved all their sauces. I didn't realize you could buy them by the bottle, or we would have. I'm sure I'll be heading back soon.
In the meantime, do you have some recommendations for good hot sauces? I like Frank's Red Hot and Texas Pete, but I'm looking beyond the mass produced. I'm not looking for habanero or anything that will cause me physical pain - just a nice hot spice that has a good flavor and lingers for a bit but doesn't make you cry. |

Go to your local H-Mart or other Asian grocery and buy Sambal Oelek. It looks like this and is quite common. It's a good Asian chili paste:

This and sriracha. |
| Thanks! OP here - sorry forgot to add sriracha and the chili-garlic sauce to my list. Any others? Looking for the equivalent of a craft beer, if that's a good analogy. |

PP 21:30 again.
Dave's Gourmet hot sauces are quite good. They have one, Dave's Ultimate Insanity Sauce that is probably the hottest sauce I've had in the US. But they have a whole like ranging from mild to hot. For a variety, you might want to try their Spicy Variety Six-Pack, which is a selection from medium to hot. http://store.davesgourmet.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=38 |
Keep in mind that that sambal oelek is very salty. |
+1! It is comes in a few different varieties, but I love the original version and the one with lime. |
| Whole Foods rockville had a demo this past week of a variety of sauces including a honey buffalo chicken that had a nice kick. I bought one but can't remember the name. |

Tapatio, Sriracha and the green Tabasco are my favorites.
I saw a video of someone smearing Sriracha on the rim of their coke can and taking a swig. I'll admit, I would try that. |
| My favorite is Louisiana hot sauce. It's a bit thicker and less vinegary than Tabasco. I dip my grilled cheese sandwiches in it. |

Sriracha is very hot so be careful. Louisiana hot sauce is quite vinegary. I use it in almost everything I cook but I wouldn't use it just as a hot sauce. Cholula is really good but
it's also mass produced. I like these sauces a lot: http://www.hotsauceplanet.com/daves-insanity-hot-sauce-s/28.htm |
| I make my own, with a mixture of fresh and dried chilies, some salt, garlic, sugar, lime juice, and vinegar. |
