NYU fertility center saves embryos during Sandy power outage

I figure a lot of us could relate to this story.

I can't imagine being one of the women trying to come in for an egg retrieval or an embryo transfer in the middle of all that craziness. Talk about stress! But it seems like everything worked out as well as it could. It was heartening to read that other clinics stepped forward to accommodate the center's patients.

What a nice story. I hope there are many great outcomes for the people affected. Its nice that the staff treated the situation like what it was - saving lives.

That's a great story. Thanks for sharing OP. I really hope those people all get BFPs.

Just read this and started bawling! Also cannot imagine that level of stress -- for the patients or the doctors. Quite uplifting.

OP here: It made me tear up, too. I hope everything goes well with all those families affected.

Wow, what an amazing story. I hope all of the people who criticize their doctors and clinics for being cold hearted money grubbers will read this and realize that there are people who clearly do care about helping women get pregnant.

Why oh why did I read the comments?!? But it is a great story. Stupid comments section!

OP here -- yeah, I should have warned folks off the comments. I didn't read them myself until later and they were infuriating and ignorant, as I probably should have expected.

I read this story and found it so uplifting too - really a good news story. I was also fascinated what they said about the embryos that were already frozen (I'm guessing vitrified? vice slow frozen) didn't need freezers because they were in liquid nitrogen.

I didn't read the comments when I first saw this because I usually find commenters to be a bunch of wackos. No exception here!

But what a reminder to keep family participation in IVF, a matter of medical privacy involving myself, DH, and the unborn individuals. I am so glad to have the science, and the funds, available to me to use this amazing process and 100% thrilled to be using it (thrilled, except for the costs of course, which seem so unfair).

Commenters are idiots, and what many say defies logic. I too ask, have all these commenters adopted, before bringing yet another child into the world? Have they paid $40,000 and several years to adopt, or gone through foster-to-adopt?
