I know I'm to blame but I'm still upset

Anonymous
Have been having lots of stomach issues and have had difficulty functioning these past few weeks. Had to wait a few months to get in to see a doctor in town. After dropping my son off at daycare, and pulling over because I was dizzy on the way over, I arrived at my appointment 10 minutes late. The receptionist loudly and rudely told me that the doctor would not see me because I was late. I started to tear up (this has been a particularly craptastic year for me and I'm getting emotional on the ready) and asked if I could talk to the doctor directly, and explained why I was late. She told me that it wouldn't change anything so why bother but go ahead and to take a seat. The office manager pulls me back into her office and reiterates the secretary's rude message, with no compassion when I explain my symptoms. She then asks when I want to reschedule an appointment. I rip up the intake form and said I would never come back. So yeah, I know it was my fault for arriving late, and I get it.......but I still am upset for being treated so rudely.

I hear you, OP. A very similar thing happened to me but when I talked to the manager, she apologized. 10 minutes seem short but even if they couldn't see you, they shouldn't have been so rude.

You could write a letter to the doctor. I suspect that doctors often don't have any idea how rude their staffs can be.

I hope you feel better soon!

And if you had been on time you would have had to wait an hour anyway. Seriously I've never heard of a doctors office cancelling an appointment like that. Maybe moving it around some but still seeing you that day.

Were you really only 10 minutes late? time to see a new doctor. Most practices have a 15 minute window. My DH is a pedi and they have a 15 minute window. If you miss it, you can wait to see if they can fit you in. Im sorry you're not feeling well Try to find a new doctor!

Seriously. Who was the doctor? Call BS like this out.

With the symptoms you describe--if it turns out to be serious, they could have a major lawsuit on their hands. It was not reasonable for them to turn you away, even if you were an hour late.

Doc's name: spill it...If what you are saying is true, it can never be defamation, btw.

OP here. Yes, I was only 10 minutes late....I usually do try to arrive early/on-time for new appointments but I've been a mess lately. The doctor was Maureen Passaro in Olney, MD. I'm already envisioning the letter/charge they are going to send me for the "missed appointment."

I'm sorry. If your pain continues, maybe you should head to the ER? Especially if you're getting dizzy enough to pull over.

OP again...thanks all, for the kind words/support. I think I will leave some negative feedback on 1 or 2 of the online rating sites for doctors. Maybe, I'll think about writing a letter to her. Thankfully, I had already set-up a second opinion in advance at John Hopkins at the end of November, so at least I have another appointment already lined up with someone else....and I will definitely be early for that one!

Exactly. That's BS, OP!

You have truly been waiting months for this appointment? That's unbelievable! I agree that if you are seriously ill, they have a lawsuit on their hands.

OP, you were late because you are run down from having been fighting through an illness and pain. You could have been 10 minutes late like you were due to having to pull over because you were dizzy, or you could have never arrived at all because you continued driving while dizzy and gotten in a terrible car accident that left your child motherless. You made the right decision.

OP, I think the way they treated you is inexcusable. There are enough doctors in the metro DC area to choose from; none of us have to put up with that kind of treatment. If I were you, I would definitely leave a negative comment, and if you are on Angie's List, leave one there, as well.
