Wearing High Heels to Work

Like many women, I am a shoe-aholic. I'm trendy and love high heels...not just cuz they allow me to reach the subway rails (I'm vertically challenged), but mostly just because I love fashion. But this makes me the oddball in my office. Everyone else is in jeans and sneakers everyday and then they complain that my heels are too loud. I don't wear half my wardrobe because I don't want to be overdressed (by their standards). I don't want to annoy people, but at the same time I don't want to give up my beloved shoes or the lift they give me. So just curious...how many of you wear heels to work? Do you colleagues complain about it, or do they wear heels too? I see tons of women outside going to work in their heels. Maybe it's just my office? Is there something I can put on the bottoms of my shoes to make them quieter?

I do! My office ranges from ballet flats to stilletos. Sneakers and flip flops are not allowed (although in the summer, there are plenty of flip-flopping sandals that people wear--just not your typical flip-flop.

We have a lot of carpet but also sections of wood. I admit, my heels are loud. I also admit that I occasionally tip toe across the hardwood to avoid the echo. But to my knoweldge, nobody has complained.

lol. I tip-toe too. I guess I will just have to keep tip-toeing.

They actually have the nerve to complain about heel noise? How about the deafening sound from their utter lack of fashion sense?

I worked out in the boonies for years, and just learned to live with the "Did you see what she's wearing TODAY?" comments after about year 2. Blahniks make me happy. Balenciaga makes me positively gleeful. Don't let them take your joy from you!

When I was like 8 months pregnant, I finally relented and wore flats for exactly one day. Another pregnant woman (who reported to me, no less) actually called down the hall "Hello, fellow wadler!" and that did it. Choos back on until the moment of delivery.

All that being said, avoid wooden clogs and make sure your soles haven't worn through to the nails so that they don't have any real reason to complain.

I would fall flat on my face if I wore shoes like that (love my Danskos!) I bet if you went to a shoe repair place they could put something on to quiet the shoes a little--might make them wear longer too.

I freaking LOVE this post - totally with you. Was in heels the whole time I was pregnant and people kept commenting about how awful it must be but I was just happier that way!

And I'm sorry, but I can't believe your co-workers would complain! That is simply nuts. I suspect they are just a little insecure. Let's face it - DC is NOT known for having good fashion sense so it must just be a reflection on them. I totally applaud you for wearing things you like and that make you happy!

Zumbamama, I knew I liked you!

Heels are not just for the vertically challenged! I love to wear heels for fashion purposes and at 5'9", I'm close to 6' tall with them on. If you're truly concern about the noise, a good shoe guy can put new outsoles on to soften the sound.

I hear you 5'9, my best friend is 6'2 and she used to feel self concious wearing heels, but after she saw my collection she said to hell with it. Now she is 6'5 with heels on, and loves her shoes too much to care what anyone else thinks.

The only time I wear flats is too the beach and to teach class, and even then the soles are an inch thick!

oops I mispelled the word "too". It should be "to". Don't want anyone to think I can't spell...lol

Wear whatever you want to work! But - be careful if you wear stilettos on the metro. I've been stabbed by those heinous things when the metro suddenly breaks and a woman in stilettos steps back onto my foot.
