Almost 2 - when do you offer a comforter or other blanket to sleep under?

My son is almost 2 and I'm looking towards this winter and wondering what he will sleep in. He has been in footed PJs for bedtime since he was born, but it feels like it might be time to transition to 2-piece pajamas and to offer him a blanket or comforter to sleep under. (He has a lovey blanket that he sleeps with and loves.) I figure when we transition him to a bed he'll need to learn to sleep under covers, so this is a good move in that direction. I'm curious, though - when did others offer their kids "covers"? Or do you think I should just keep using the footed PJs?

Why move to the two-piece pajamas? My daughter is 5 and still likes the footed sleepers! But seriously, I have a 2 year old and I haven't put a blanket over here. She'd just kick it off, anyway. I just keep her in the footed jammies (switch to fleece for winter) and use flannel sheets. Did it with my first one, too, and I think she started sleeping under a blanket when she was 3. I'd just keep doing what you're doing if it works!

We started giving our kids a blanket shortly after 1. They are now just over 2 and stay under their blankets all night (rarely they will throw it off (we got big fleece lap throws so they are big!))

We had to switch from one piece to 2 piece when they were about 22 months since they were unzipping them and taking off their diaper. Not fun. We are hoping they are past that and will keep their 1 piece pjs on this winter. If not we'll go with fleece 2 piece and socks.

Our babe has been sleeping under a blanket since before she turned one.

My 11 month old likes to go to bed with a cloth diaper, to chew on and rub against his face, but the other night I put him down with a receiving blanket instead. After giving my older DC a bath, I thought I heard the cat meowing at the door -- it was the 11 mo. old with the blanket wrapped tightly around his head and chest. he must have rolled over and gotten himself tangled up in it. I had no idea that that was the danger; I thought it was dangerous for younger babies who wouldn't be able to move away if the blanket got balled up in front of their face or something. It was totally scary for him and for me!!! So be careful with blankets, even for "older" babies!!!

My son got a pillow and blanket in his crib immediately after his 1 year birthday. Helped a great deal with a difficult sleeper.
