white noise

Anonymous
I have been using white noise for my baby to sleep. It is needed because I also have loud toddler. Does anyone know if this causes hearing damage? Thanks.

We use it for our daughter, and I've been using it all my life. No problems here.

OP here: Thanks, that is good to know. I just read something about it on the internet promoting "pink noise" b/c it claims that white noise causes hearing damage. I should know better than to believe everything I read on the net!

I know tons of people who use "white noise" and we use it for our 7 mos. old. It has been a blessing to block out doggy claws, creaking steps and other noises. I think as long as it is at a normal level, you'll be fine.

I think the only thing to worry about is your child's future spouse! My husband grew up with sleeping with a fan on at night and it was a huge adjustment for me. We actually use both a fan and humidifer for our son. I keep feeling sorry for his future wife! But, in terms of hearing, my husband has never had any problems.

I'm a new mom, and I am debating about whether to use the white-noise machine we got as a gift. On one hand, I see how it can be useful, but on the other, I am worried if I start using it, my daughter will grow accustomed to it and we'll never be able to put her to sleep without it. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

If you don't need it, don't use it. With regular use she will become conditioned to it and will find it harder to sleep without it. But if you use it occasionally she is less likely to become conditioned to it.

We have a humidifier that we run,but the times we've been away from home, where there is no fan Kara sleeps fine.

I think the baby becoming conditioned to it will depend on the baby. If you put the baby to sleep in different situations even in your house (a room with more noise for instance) then I don't think they'll always need the sound.

we live in a smallish apartment and have been using a white noise machine from the get-go. DS is now 7 months. he also falls asleep in noisy sitations -- like at day care -- or in situations where there is no white noise -- like at grandma's or when we travel. but like a PP said, it all might depend on the child.
