We'll be moving our DD from an in-home daycare which we all love into a formal preschool this fall. I know some will mock me, but the momentousness of this next step in our child's life is making me a little bit emotional.
Do you have any traditions or things you do leading up to the start of school to both help your child prepare and help them get excited? We have a backpack for her that we are going to wrap up as a present. We will be doing a few playdates at the school as well. We've bought two story books about preschool, and DD likes the idea, but obviously hasn't realized that it means not going to her daycare provider's any more. Any thoughts or advice for this transition for a FTM who is feeling emotional? |
I'd probably play up the "you're a big girl going to big girl school" angle. That's basically what we did, plus we just talked about the new friends she'd make, the cool stuff she'd get to do, etc. Seems to have worked. (though we moved from a daycare/preschool center in Fairfax to a preschool in Arlington, so our transition was probably more gradual.) good luck. |
I think that the transition will likely be harder on you than on her, and that's totally normal. They just so look big and brave carrying their little backpacks to preschool, it makes me a little weepy just remembering it. But since you will already have a few playdates at the school and she will be familiar with the place, I think all that is left to do is drop her off quickly and don't linger, and be sure to take a cute picture or two. |
How old is your daughter? And do you know anything about how the school will transition her in if she is nervous? Are they drop and go even if she's worried? Or will they work with you? Is it a co-op or a regular preschool? Will you get to know her teacher/friends/etc?
Remember that to you the first day is a Huge Big Deal, start of an entire year of preschool, first stop on 20+ years of schooling, etc, but to her it's just 3 hours (or whatever) in a new place. She doesn't really grasp the momentous part of it the way you do, and that's just as well. ![]() |
