Sarah Palin is a rock star in the Conservative movement. She is a very popular figure and McCain was obviously given a very large file on her accomplishments and appeal. Look at the McCain rally today- it was totally rejuvenated. This was a pick to appeal to the base (worked), get some media attention (worked) and appeal to married Republican suburban women, registered independent Hillary supporters, and socially conservative Democratic Hillary supporters (largely male). If you're actively pro-choice, or a hard core feminist dem who's pissed off about Obama (like me) you're not the target audience for this pick. The constituencies I listed all voted for Bush twice and Bill Clinton twice. McCain can win if he gets these votes. |
If you have not noticed, I have been looking for the humor in the campaign of late. Apologies to the poster who finds it snarky.
Anyway, here's the latest minor gaffe, which was pointed out by Will Thomas on Talking Points Memo http://talkingpointsmemo.com/ He links to http://www.rnc.org/, where you find the following unfortunate (for them) sequence: McCain Chooses Sarah Palin Check Out NotReady08.com I wonder (a) how long it will take them to get rid of NotReady08.com, and (b) what will happen to the web nerd who was responsible. |
I referred to myself in the last message (20:48) as though you'd know who I was, not realizing I have not signed it. Same for the original "Cindy is offended" message.

Rich again, still too lazy to go sign in. In case that smiley face looked weird, it's there because I overlooked the fact that "8)" is code for a smiley. This time I remembered to disable smileys, so it should come out right. |
Thank you for putting some clarity to all of this. Seriously-no snark. Dems lose elections, Reps don't have to actually win. |
OMG. At first I was amused, now I'm really scared this ploy could work. Just what we need, another governor of an oil state that is "on the dole" from the fed gov't (her exact words on a C-SPAN interview in Feb). Yikes. She has zero personal incentive (i.e. being an "Alaska girl") to get any type of energy reform that doesn't prop up fossil fuels. Same, same, same. Figured it was only a matter of time before the Inuit connection emerged. Doubt they'll find pix of her in "tribal" dress like Obama. ![]() |
Here is an interview that shows a pretty self-assured Governor Palin: http://www.cnbc.com/id/15840232?video=836304396. Biden better be studying this. |
The DCUM discussions about Sarah Palin got a mention in the New York Times:

Props to DCUM!
Boo Hiss to Palin, returning to work 3 days after giving birth to a baby with Downs Syndrome, that's heart breaking to me. It's ice cold and tells me plenty about her. Besides her inability to help her infant son and teen daughter while campaigning, I think her politics are dangerous and destructive. She can preach her social conservatism as a Hockey Mom or PTA mom, but not as my VP. |
Family values go beyond whether one gives birth or has an abortion. What about the fact that Sarah Palin would be ready to disrupt her family's life to the extent necessary if she were to become the VP, putting her own interests for fame and power ahead of her family's interests? Would the family move to Washington D.C. where her husband would be out of work with no oil field or fishing industry, not to mention no snow mobiles? And where her children would be thrust into a life style -- and exposure to the media -- that they are completely unprepared for? Or would she leave them all in Alaska, for all intents and purposes abandoning them? The older kids might have the resources to manage the absence of their mother, but what about the infant? And what about Bristol, who may need her mother's support now more than ever? And speaking of role models, what kind of a role model is it for a 17 year old unmarried daughter to get pregnant and for the mother of that kid to put a positive spin on it? Can we now expect more teenagers to become pregnant and think it is OK -- even noble as long as they decide to keep the baby -- because the daughter of the Vice President did it? And what about role modeling good parenting? What kind of parenting is going on in this family where Christian teaching considers pre-marital sex a sin and abstainence the solution for preventing preganacy if you do sin? So if you want to talk about "family values", let's talk about it from a bigger perspective. |

Exactly! |
Feminism has succeeded -- there is now a mediocre female VP candidate to go along with a glorious history of mediocre male candidates. Dan Quayle, Thomas Eagleton (withdrawn), Spiro Agnew ... |
I understand that Sarah Palen says that Bristol and Levi Johnston, (who is also still in high school and age 17 or 18) are going to get married. I haven't heard anything from Bristol Palin or from Levi Johnson. What do they -- what does he -- have to say? I read on some blog or other that he said on his FaceBook site (now closed) he did not want to have kids. Does he even want to get married? |
Doubt he wants to get married at 17. Or the Palins can sick the law on Levi for statutory rape if he's 18. |
I keep coming down to this:
How on earth do you leave a 4 month old newborn AND a pregnant daughter to run for Vice President and then possibly serve as VP? How is your family not more important? The more this sits with me, the more I think she is a horrible person for doing this to her family. Put aside all the questions of inexperience and right-wing policy positions, if you're gonna have five kids, including one with speical needs at the age of 44, and including one with whom you've done such a bang-up job that she's now pregnant at 17, maybe you oughta stick around to see it through to the end. And I absolutely would feel the same way if it were a man running. I thought John Edwards was slimy for running while his wife had cancer and he had two young kids. If Obama had a newborn and a pregnant teenaged daughter, I'd think he had his priorities screwed up too. And I'm setting aside the notion of how she will perform as VP with her family demands (she's said she'll take her Down Syndrom child to work, go to therapy sessions with him, etc). Haven't many women had to compromise a bit on their career goals in order to put family first? Yes, I'm a Democrat who's voting for Obama. But it's hard for me to imagine how even conservatives wouldn't at least sort of agree with me on this. Any conservatives out there who want to tell me why I'm wrong? |
