I thought she did a good job on the speech. I feel proud of her as woman, and she seems to be a good leader for her state. However, we differ on politics and there is no way I am voting for McCain so it's a non starter for me. I think she will get skewered in the debates. I have to say, I am somewhat uncomfortable with our potential future President having an infant child (male or female). |
Why? |
If it were a man running who had an infant with Down's syndrome, we would all be admiring his wife who would be dedicated to raising that child and doing everything it took to be the best mom ever. So is her husband doing this? Who's going to be the parent who will be there for that kid?
I have no problem if it is him. In fact it would be a great role model for other families. But I just wonder if it's likely that he is playing that role. |
Speaking of her children, this is probably a politically incorrect question that applies to both VP candidates: might it be a conflict of interest for a potential CIC to have a son (or daughter) in Iraq? My own bias is that any pres should treat war decisions as though his/her loved ones were among those risking their lives for their country. |
I think she has loads of valuable experience. Let's not just believe the Democratic talking points here- look at her resume! She is very popular in Alaska because she is effective. She defeated an incumbent Governor. As to the size of her town, I can tell you- I have led a small business and been a middle manager in a very large company. It is MUCH harder to run the small business. |
I'm not at all surprised that people have to start nit-picking for things to criticize - in particular her family. Why don't we criticize Obama and JFK since they have/had young families too? Good point, by the way, to the above poster. |
Fair question, not sure I can articulate it. It may just feel like such a new thing to me that I am uncomfortable. I am sure her husband is very involved already given her position. But I am not sure how will it will sit with base in the GOP. Republican women that are conservative are not going to relate to Sarah Palin at all. Independents are not typically from the conservative base, but I think they also will find her too far to the right, and too far "other" (strongly pro lilfe, NRA, Alaska, etc.)
I am for Obama, and one could certainly argue his political career has been full force since his youngest was very small, so I admit that I am not being particularly progressive about this. |
He is a commercial fisherman and, when fishing is out of season, works in an oil field. I don't know about his role specifically, but I always heard those were two jobs, by nature of their locations, tended to involve a lot of time away from home (i.e., weeks at a time). |
As a liberal feminist, I have to add that I think it's WONDERFUL the Republicans are willing to nominate a working mom with an infant. Times have changed since the culture wars of the 1980's when Republican women weren't supposed to work. This is awesome. Too bad the liberals have moved backwards in this respect. |
At least she ran a budget. Yeah, it may have been not a big town, but she has done it. I think it is a brilliant choice. Obama would be sexist to call her inexperienced since her CV is just as thin as his. |
Why do people continue to drag in JFK? He's 3 generations removed. Life is different now. |
Why have we moved backwards? I do think it is a big step to nominate her in the GOP. I do not think it will play well with the base, but where else are they going to go? Will it swing the soccer mom vote? Pretty unclear. I am not voting for Obama because he is black, and I am not voting for McCain because he picked a female VP. |
well God bless Hail Mary. hope he wins |
What is this Vogue thing? Where is that from ? |
First - my fluffy opinions -
*Gasp* You're kidding me. Those sound like Hollywood celebrity names. Poor kids. I know she has a son going or in Iraq and the 4 month old. How old are the other kids? And I thought the name Beau was bad... My non-fluffy opinion - yeah, it's cool that either a McCain win or Obama win will brng a first to government (first AA or first woman), but I do think this was more of a desperation pick in order to pick HRC supporters. I read an article on Yahoo saying the social conservatives were very happy with the pick. That alone has me screaming "no!!! don't vote for McCain!!!". I wonder how her selection will effect the campaign - I can see it being tough to go negative against her. McCain and co. will be able to go negative against Obama/Biden, but if they try to go negative against Palin I can see it getting turned around and making them seem like sexist men who don't respect women, don't value family, blah blah blah. Politically, I think it was a good choice in that regard. |
