Is John McCain your country? I believe you have confused a "selection" with an "election".

There are actually, in this day and age, people who think the regular presence of both parents is needed to raise children.

Other than the dust-up about her brother-in-law, her reformist credentials are impeccable; she outdoes McCain at spitting in her party's face. But can a 100% pro-lifer win over HRC voters?

I love a reformer, first of all. But you asked about a 100% pro-lifer winning over HRC's supporters. Speaking only for me, Rich: I have never been comfortable with the Democratic Party's insistence on abortion as a key tenet upon which we're supposed to rest our identity as a party. I know this will be a very unpopular view on DCUM, but I have to be honest and say that, at times, our party has gone much further in this direction than I personally feel good about. I may be the only woman on this board who feels that way, and that's okay with me. Flame away. But since you asked an honest question, Rich, I wanted to give you an honest answer.

I'm not the PP, but anybody with a brain knows there's a difference between working outside the home and running for/being frickin' Vice President of the United States. For the next four months (AT LEAST) she will either be dragging a four-month-old around the country on a grueling schedule where she'll have little or no time to dedicate to him OR she'll be leaving him behind while she's campaigning, essentially removing herself from his life for a third of his infancy. I'm a feminist, I work full time, my DD is in daycare, and I am genuinely aghast. I wasn't going to vote for McCain anyway, but I don't think I'm the only mother of an infant -- on either side of the aisle -- who is thinking this way right now.

<sarcasm>Right, because a typical stay at home dad is EXACTLY what we're talking about here.</sarcasm> And lest you go after me as not being sufficiently feminist, I completely agree with the OP when she said that in Palin's situation "I wouldn't be applying for 20-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week jobs. And for equality's sake, I wouldn't want my husband to, either." I'll even go a bit further -- as a feminist, I support Governor Palin's right to make her own choices on work-family balance. But on the public stage, the decisions she makes are up for discussion and, yes, judgment.

Also, you spelled Democratic wrong.

I would be concerned about the "family values" of a man who chose to run for VP in her current family situation, even if his wife were a SAHM.

On another note, single moms and dads can relate to Biden, because he can empathize with them. He was a single dad himself.

Do you think she can bone-up for the VP debates by the time it rolls around?

Did anyone see her speak at noon? This is such a wild card...she could be a phenomenal speaker for all we know. I hear a little pageant training goes a long way!

She's not! Such a cheesy convention.

All I can say is, if I had four kids at home, one of whom is an infant with Down Syndrome, I wouldn't be applying for 20-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week jobs. And for equality's sake, I wouldn't want my husband to, either.

But questionable family values aside, I don't see how being two years removed from small-town mayor makes one qualified to be the next president. And with a candidate as old as McCain, it's even more important that his VP be ready to take the controls. She might be a good pick, but I think her time has not yet come.

Plus a son in the US Army serving over seas (in the Middle East?). Doesn't McCain also have a son enlisted? Either way, you can't argue that the war doesn't hit home for these guys and gives her even more motivation to get our troops home.

Biden has a son who will be shipping off to Iraq in October. He also has a vested interested in getting the troops home.

I agree that the Democratic Party's former emphasis on pro-choice purity was overdone. And Obama made it clear in his acceptance speech that he agrees. But for McCain to pick up pro-life purity is, IMHO, the same error.

On the other hand, based on my small knowledge of her background, mostly from the not always reliable Wikipedia, I believe she would be a great improvement over the current VP. And should she face the Harry Truman moment, I think she is likely to rise to the occasion and be an improvement over the present occupant of the Oval Office. [Talk about damning with faint praise!!!!!!}

Since public officials are fair game... can we talk a bit about their choice in names for their kids:

Track
Trig
Willow
Bristol
Piper

Thoughts? I for one think it sounds a bit foolish.... Just my humble opinion.
